Much of our population struggles with issues stemming from brain imbalances. New research is finding a strong connection between our gut bacteria and our mental health. I will discuss how food impacts our gut, and has the power to either exasperate imbalances like depression, or boost our overall well being.

I avoid carbs. I eat a protein and veg based diet. I also eat a lot of unrefined oils. My brain was being starved and poisoned by a "north American" diet. I avoid starches. Even potatoes or rice. I had an inflammatory brain condition, starch makes it worse. My family are sugar addicts, I saw why my family's eating patterns were reflecting self-medicating depressed individuals. Their eating style was generationally based. I broke the pattern.

Great speech, I'm from north Italy (former Argentinian). Almost 4 and a half years ago I've changed my nutrition radically, It changes my life in better. It changes my mind. In few weeks I've begun to feel much more energy and to "see" the life without dark sunglasses. I've read a lot of books, picked up different usufull concepts because for the first time in my life I've understood how ignorante I've been (now I'm 57 yo). Microbiota, ph level, glucose curve during the day in blood, natural vs procees food, what each color in fruits and vegetables mean, ecc. I do not take any medicines and my health is wonderful. But one more thing to improve the microbiota I think is exercise or at least not sedentariety - not to much, just the exact amount to any of us - Thanks again. Giorgia Puentes

Totally answers the question why we eat when we're sad. Serotonin, the feel good hormone, is mostly made in the gut.

Awesome job touching the surface of the gut brain connection. Another great professional to check into that explains the gut brain connection is Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride. She also wrote a book called 'Gut and psychology syndrome: Natural treatment for autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia and schizophrenia. :)

Thank you for sharing this. It is so sad that the health system still can't get their head around this. So many people suffer for years and years, while doctors refuse to help because they suffer from depression or anxiety.

So intriguing - about the breakfast especially. I have been doing intermittent fasting for the last several months, which has kept my weight consistent when the cheap, low-fiber starches I have been eating would have packed on pounds by now, but the first thing I did was stop eating (oatmeal) breakfast. My overall mood has shifted toward depression. Time to experiment with fasting periodically and getting back to that lovely, starchy breakfast.

We all know that we have bacteria in our gut and through out the body, but I never realized it was a 9:1 ratio (9 bacteria to every 1 human cell). I also never considered how much what we eat can affect that bacteria, the bacteria affects not only our digestive system, but also our brains and the way we think. The more fruits and vegetables the more diverse the bacteria, and the better we feel. It surprised me that the connection between the gut bacteria and the brain is so strong that it can actually affect hormone levels to create either depression (a low level of neurotransmitters in the brain) or anxiety (a high level of neurotransmitters in the brain). It’s amazing that 90% of the serotonin and 50% of the dopamine in our bodies are made in our gut.
If symptoms are present we can correct them by eating more starch (to decrease serotonin levels by 10%), or eat more protein (to increase serotonin levels by 35%) for breakfast. This video makes you think of what your body and consider that the food we eat alone can affect our behaviors, digestive system, and even personality. This was very informational and interesting considering how many ways what we eat has an impact on us in all aspects of our lives.

Let me tell you about my digestive system that was finally diagnosed 27 Years ago. I had to go off almost all vegetables, grain, nuts, seeds, all fruit, artificially coloured and flavoured foods, all of which I never bought. I only ever bought fresh food.


Salycilates-in all vegetable matter, my gut couldn't take. So here I am now, it's been nearly forty years since the problem began and still I can just manage a couple of veggies and some nuts with my plain meat and fish diet.


I'll say this though, I'm a lot healthier now than I was when the whole thing started and my doctor wouldn't listen to me. Now I'm nearly 68 years old and very happy.

Dr. Alan McDonald’s YouTube discussion on the 10 autopsies he did on MS patients finding that they all had parasites in their cerebral spinal fluid, now that blew me away. I believe that IBS has now been linked two different parasites as well.

I believe we are missing the fact that we all probably have parasites and those need to be dealt with as well to have excellent gut health.
