How to connect old WD My Cloud directly to PC

The old version of WD My Cloud (Purchased around 2015) does not receive customer support beyond April of 2022. When I got an email notice about it, I understood this to mean that I can't use the device via Wifi beyond April of 2015. I hadn't used it for at least three years. I wanted to retrieve data from the device. I also wanted to use it if possible by directly connecting it to my PC.

A WD support person helped me and I took notes. Here is the blog version of the description:

Dude! I can't express enough how much this saved me to get access to my old WD Cloud storage. the steps are a little different now. but the concept is the same - use a phone pin to press in for 5 seconds, right click to create a shortcut and then you have access to your files. I was so afraid that I had lost my files for over 10 years and now they're back! Thank you so much! <3
