WD My Cloud Direct USB Transfer and SSH Access

I was asked by a few fans to demonstrate ways to transfer files to the WD My Cloud directly via USB without using the network. You can't hook up a computer directly, but you can attach a drive to the My Cloud and connect to it via SSH or one of the WD apps to transfer files quickly via USB 3.0.

I just purchased a 6TB myCloud and tried transferring several TB of relatively small files to the drive over my GB Ethernet.  The transfer kept failing part way through and I had to restart the transfer after some cleanup.  I finally decided USB would be less likely to fail so I followed your excellent tutorial and transferred 560GB from my WD MyPassport Slim to the myCloud drive.  It took over 8hrs, but the transfer went smoothly.

One post note I would add to your tutorial is to be sure to unmount the USB drive from myCloud using the WDMyCloudDashboard before you unplug it.  If you don't the USB drive may not mount the next time you plug it in to the myCloud.

I have some information which I want to share with people watching this video. I'll try to be brief. If you have a large amount of files you want to upload and internet is too slow, or got stuck somewhere, read this:

You CAN connect the WD my cloud directly to the computer, transfer files using the regular file explorer and get very fast speeds. You can do it over an ethernet cable. I've only tested it on windows 7:
-go to your mycloud dashboard
-go to networking and change the ip to "static"
-put in an ip outside router range, for example 10.0.0.1
then
-on your pc go to control panel, networking, change adapter settings
-right click local area connection (the one you usually use when connected to the internet) and go to properties
- double click internet protocol version 4 and change ip to 10.0.0.1 (the same one you used before)

-connect the mycloud and pc through the ethernet ports(internet). go to my computer and right click Network. it's located on the left hand side.  then choose map network drive, and put in 10.0.0.1\yourusernamehere
you can now browse and transfer files from mycloud and pc with the maximum speeds allowed by your hard disks.

So, in short: change both the pc's network adapter and mycloud's ip address to the same ip. Then, add the mycloud through map network drive.

This is what I did a year ago when I was confused about the whole thing and my network wasn't set up properly yet. I hope this quick fix helps in an emergency!

Another option is to use two USB 3.0 Type A connections at either end of a cable that tricks the external hard drive into functioning as 4.8 Gigabit Network connection. Then you can drag and drop, copy, paste, move files as you would from any normal Windows PC. Not sure if your Apple PC supports that.

Hey man, glad to be a member of your channel;I just bought my second wd dl4100, and I would like set users at home to access files through a web page instead of the mobile app, just like twonky but not with the admin password where they can also modify my twonky settings. this would make things easier for those who are not in the same subnet.thanks

Thanks Lon. I'll give it a try. I've had this thing for half a year now, and still havn't transfered my 500gigs of data because transferring via wifii, is PAINstakingly SLOW ! I was pissed when i learned i couldn't just connect my computer via usb 3.0 for a speedy file transfer. They really need to change that

Is there a way and what suggestions to you have ? Most of the information I've been able to locate states you have enter the SSH and make changes there. Can you help?

Nice video! Personally the quickest way is just to enter the folders by Windows Explorer. Just type in //ipaddressofthewdmycloud/ in the address bar and you can copy, move, delete files with some easy copy and paste work from your pc.
