Why You Should Switch Jobs Every Three Years

Some employers are suggesting that workers change jobs every three years or so. They say if an employee sticks at a company too long it can build complacency. Those who change companies from time to time show a willingness to learn and an ability to adapt. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian hosts of The Young Turks discuss.

How long have you been in your job? Do you think you should switch every few years? Let us know in the comments below.

“Changing jobs every couple of years used to look bad on a resume. It told recruiters you can’t hold down a job, can’t get along with colleagues, or that you’re simply disloyal and can't commit.

That stigma is fast becoming antiquated—especially as millennials rise in the workplace with expectations to continuously learn, develop, and advance in their careers. This sentiment is different than the belief of past generations that you cling to an employer over a lifetime in the hopes that your long-term employer will treat you fairly in the end with a matching 401(k) plan, among other benefits.”

People hop because employers aren't giving the raises they used to. The days of loyalty in corporate America have died a long time ago. This is what happens when you treat employees as liabilities.

When you begin to be loyal what happens? The company begins to take advantage of you and disrespect you.

My dad stuck with one company for 15 years. Then the CEOs didn't want to give him a raise he deserved and tricked him into leaving by telling him they were about to go bankrupt.
He left, they're still standing, there's the loyalty payoff for ya.

Loyalty costs. You want people to stick around? Give them a decent wage and treat them well.

A lot of companies simply don't promote from within anymore, so you have to climb the ladder among companies rather than within.

If companies like job hoppers, it's because they don't have to pay them a pension down the road, simple as that. That's why a lot of companies hire on people on 5 year contracts now rather than as full-time employees. It's cheaper in the long run for them.

The earlier you start investing, the better. Investing is the key 🔑 to financial freedom. Nobody wanna spend their entire lives work for a company .

Of course CEO's say this. Fast turnover=lower wages.

If I'm liking my job I'm gonna stick with it. My overall goal in life is to be happy, not necessarily successful.

To see a great example of corporate loyalty just look at cell phone and cable plans. A loyal customer of 20 years get nothing, no discounts, no free stuff nothing. A brand new customer gets a discounted rate and other benefits.
If businesses aren't loyal to their customers why would they be loyal to their employees?

it also keeps you from getting seniority and getting more pay.

"No no silly millenial" said the babyboomer, "Don't bother climbing all the way up to the top, just change jobs and start all over again from the bottom! We'll definitely appreciate that on your resume and this definitely won't totally screw you over in the long run."

I job hop because I want to. I'm 28 and I've had 20+ different jobs. I've never been fired, I just get bored easily.

I'm 27 and have been with my current employer for almost 9 years. You bet I'm not job hopping. I work at a great place love my job and make enough money to support myself and have discretionary funds for a few things I enjoy.

All my big salary increases have come from changing companies and never sticking around and receiving annual and performance increases.

Either that, or you could work for a promotion and/or raise.

CEOs are pushing for this, are they? Uh huh.

I agree with this. Depending on what industry you're in, every 2 to 3 years you should always want to continue to grow and adopt new skills to master your craft.

We dont hop to a new job because we think its better than our current job. We hop because we hope its better. But i'm learning that all jobs are equally shit.

I decided to retire at the age of 32 and starting my own business and freelance. Even if I fail, I will never go back to being an employee.
