Miyeokguk, or Korean Seaweed Soup, is said to date back to the Goryeo dynasty when people observed whales eating seaweed after giving birth to their calves. Today it’s a traditional birthday dish, and we remember and honor our mothers as we enjoy it. There are many variations and methods of preparation, and it really comes down to your preference. I learned to make this dish in Michigan during my first pregnancy, while getting directions over the phone from my mom in California.
