Miyeok Guk Birthday Seaweed Soup 미역국
Ingredients
Miyeok (dried) 10 grams
Beef (Bulgogi/shabu shabu cut) 50 grams
Sesame oil 1 tablespoon 15ml
Soy sauce (Regular/Korean) 1 tablespoon 15ml
Salt 0.5-0.3 teaspoon 2.5-1.5ml
Black pepper some
Water 1 liter 1000ml
- Miyeok is one kind of seaweed and is widely used in Korea for cooking soup, salad, and side dishes.
- It is also called sea mustard or brown seaweed and wakame in Japanese.
- Seaweed is considered a very healthy food in Korea also good for breastfeeding mothers.
- Right after giving birth, Korean mothers are advised to consume this Miyeok Guk so it had become the icon of "Birthday". When it's your birthday, many Koreans will ask you 'have you had your Miyeok Guk today'.
- Never serve it on "test day". Since Miyeok is slippery, Koreans have this myth about drinking Miyeok Guk on the day like, test, exam, a job interview will make the good luck will "slip away".
More about recipe
- In case you use Soup soy sauce, use less salt
- I stir-fried beef and miyeok before boiling but you can start from boiling without stir-frying. In that case, you can add sesame oil at the end.
- You can substitute beef with any kind of meat you want, chicken, lamb, pork....
- I don't add garlic and green onion for Miyeokguk unless I cook with fish or seafood.
- Using whole fish or seafood can make very good miyeokguk too.
- For vegan recipe, I add Dashima(Konbu) only and start boiling.

I'm not promoting any products. The reason why I show you the products I'm using is... I want to point out if you use other brands you might adjust the ratio a little bit. And also the reason why I made the recipe a very small amount is... when you try a new recipe, please make it a very small amount and then make an adjustment then you decide your final recipe. That's what I do too.
