Bad engine mounts are a big enemy of exhausts, failures of the flexible joints can be traced to excessive engine movement.
A great video as always Charles.

A friend of mine had an engine mount fail on his VW Golf mk2 diesel.... He drove it to another friend who is a mechanic and found that the only thing keeping the engine up was a ground strap to the battery....

That transition from getting out of the car to propping up the hood was smooth

Great video Charles, not only the concepts are really well explained but you also made some nice shots by placing the camera into really intricate places. Amazing!

Thank you brother! I really appreciate you and your videos. Especially because you explain not just how to replace a part, but also what the part does in quite good detail, why they fail, the multiple different symptoms a person may experience, and in this case, multiple ways to gain access to the part(s) you are replacing. You are the man! :)

Great video. One of the first mechanic things I ever did was with my neighbor who was thankfully mechanically inclined and worked on his 60s Datsun convertible, 70s Nova, 90s MB SL500 and 20s BMW 535. He helped me change my motor/tranny mounts on my MK6 VW GLI and I learned and he saved me about $700. I have since replaced those mounts with 034 Motorsport solid rubber (not poly) mounts. I love investing in middle market tools and learning to fix my car, learning all its systems and enjoying my car ownership experience. But unfortunately I will have to pay $1k-$1.4K for labor and $600/parts for chain stretch on my high mileage car. But I always see it as learning how things work and excited to tackle bigger jobs across whatever cars I own in the future.

Love the content. I have worked on cars most of my life but it's always great to refresh on things!

Wow thanks man, exactly the clear and concise instructions I was looking for. Doing a lot of work on my 99 miata, control arms are out for new bushings, rad is out and replacing all the coolant hoses, as well as timing belt and water pump. The car has 145000 km and the mounts are original along with everything else so now that I'm this deep I'm sure you'd agree that I should replace the mounts as well. Thanks for taking away my apprehension of doing this.

That broken drivers side mount is pretty typical on NA/NB Miatas. If you used stock ones and go autocross/track it will likely break again soon. Mazda Comp engine mounts aren't too harsh and last a lot longer.

This is very timely for me. I had a shop replace mine on my '99 Miata, both torn, at 70K miles when they did the clutch. Now I'm at 157K miles and with new vibrations I suspect they need replacing again.

Great vid! Only thing I'd add is another symptom of bad mounts on FWD/AWD is pulling when hard acceleration as the engine shift.. also impossible to align. Thanks man!

This is excellent timing, my LW Ford Focus was recently diagnosed as having sagging engine mount/s. I drove it today and I noticed some weird handling characteristics coming from the left front tyre, could be totally random or tyre related, but yeh, when the engine is sagging it could affect things such as the anlge of the drivshaft etc.

Good explanation! On my Acura, 3 engine mounts are covered with rubber boots, so I can't see the mount's rubber. I did acceleration test in D and R and engine had a usual movement. I do hear clunking(?) sound when I put my car from P to R, D and vice versa. Also when driving from 2nd and downshifting to 1st, I feel engine brake which is accompanied by a sound(thump maybe). Transmission mount is visible and has some cracks around the perimeter, but I don't see how this could be the issue.
