Transmission removal, replacement, and installation. Learn how to remove a transmission so you can replace your clutch or flywheel, or so you can rebuild your transmission and install a new one in your car or truck.

In this video I show you the 10 simple steps on how to replace a transmission. I am doing this on a rear wheel drive 98 Mustang but the process is very similar on other rear wheel drive, front wheel drive, and even automatic cars and trucks. Each detailed step will allow you to learn how to remove a transmission yourself so you can replace a clutch, flywheel, rear main seal, throw out bearing, pilot bearing, or just swap transmissions.

To answer the most common questions in the comments section:
1.) Quality videos like this take a lot of time to produce. This and the next took me over 300hrs.
2.) Follow me on Instagram "ChrisFixit" for daily updates and tips and tricks.
3.) The exhaust on the car is the performance exhaust, just used on the track.
4.) The speedometer is fine... it spun all the way around at the last drift event and I havent had a chance to take the gauge cluster out and push it back to the other side of the peg.

A year ago I'd never changed my own oil. Today I completed swapping an engine. Yes, your videos are that clear and informative. Had a pretty good sized hole in the block (sorry, Arizona, for leaving a rod on the side of the road. Oops.) You're an incredible teacher. Thanks!

This is why I drive automatics. Lol good work Chris. My dad and I replaced his clutch on a late 90s camaro. Took like 5 hours but we were a 33 year old with bad eyesight and a distracted 14 year old who just wanted a wataburger when we were done. Also didn't have a transmission jack. Dad was benchpressing the transmission while I shoved it forward to install. He knew what he was doing, but I lacked the skills to be of any real use. Wish I would have taken it all more seriously at that time and appreciated the time spent together. Thanks for the memories

Honestly what amazes most about these videos after watching a few is how he gets the camera right where he’s explaining. It could be the smallest gap or tightest spot but he gets that camera there to show what he’s doing. Magic. Simply magic.

I absolutely adore the fact that you cover all steps, even if you already did another video on it. You have the highest quality content I've ever seen. No joke.

I had fun doing this a few years ago for my 94 Mazda B2300. Clutch went out, and I had barely any money so I did the whole job with a few harbor freight sockets, extensions, torque wrench, and jack stands. Everything else was by hand, I had to lay the transmission on my chest and knees to get it off and on. Even used the truck's jack to lift the truck because I didn't have a proper jack at the time. Really taught me how much can be done with simple hand tools, and I haven't been scared about any other repair job since then.

Hey Chris, it’s Chris. I’ve never worked on cars nor do I plan on it, however I watch every single one of your videos and here’s why. It gives me knowledge of automobiles I ordinarily would not have. I then take that knowledge to the mechanics shop and I’m able to have conversations about my vehicle where I seem like I know what I’m talking about preventing me from being taken advantage of! Thank you for this! Just wanted to chime in and let you know that there is a tremendous amount of value in what you do even when some of your audience will never work on cars. Thanks buddy!

this guy is seriously the best. tutorial vids are usually harder to make than most youtube videos because they have to be thorough and detailed while also not being concise by showing the most important parts and not simply showing a 6 hour long video. chris fix has NEVER failed to deliver. and he always goes the extra mile to lay out the parts and explain what could go wrong and what could be different with different cars.

The mark of a good video maker is the inability to click away. I didn't intend on watching a 28 minute auto repair video at 1 am but that is what happened. Good video as always Chris!

I will likely never be able to do such complex repairs, but your videos have given me a more realistic understanding of how the components of my car, not only fit together, but how they work. At the very least, I am much more knowledgeable when talking to my mechanic. It's much harder to be taken advantage of if you have a better idea of how things work. Thank you, you are a great teacher!
