I'm not sure why drug traffickers would be prohibited from the prisoner recruitment scheme, they would probably be good at logistics.

I swear every comment section related to Ukraine anywhere on this damn site is just a wasteland

I was skeptical about the prison law but knowing now that it's non-violent criminals put that at ease.

They really said that the northern offensive "might have been" less effective than expected because it didn't capture Kharkiv when there were only a few thousand men with no armour...

This is just my take on the offensive but I don't honestly think the Russians initially even going to have a full offensive when they did. There were far too little men there and the ones that were there were relatively inexperienced.
imo the light infantry probably moved in to trouble Ukraine and drag away manpower from the east but noticing the shocking lack of defence the commanders were like "what the heck" and just continued.
it would account for the lack of mechanized assaults

There was a criminal US Army recruit who did basic training with me in 1998. I was told that a judge gave him the choice of prison or the US Army. He was loud and prone to verbal aggression and making threats but wisely, he didn't become physically aggressive. I guess he wasn't a big fan of the prison lifestyle. The US have a history of using criminals in the military dating back at least to WW2. Criminals are more likely to be sociopaths and psychopaths. Such individuals can be quite useful during war due to the having significantly less inhibition to committing violent acts against other human beings. Also, getting some criminals in the military is doubly beneficial. Not only do they end up helping protect their country's interests, they also no longer have to be housed, fed, given medical care while doing nothing beneficial for society.

FYI, the ASC-890 is a Saab 340 turbo prop commuter aircraft, fitted with a large radar antenna on top.

Shoigu is certainly not a scapegoat... he actually IS one of those who is most responsible for the failures of the Russian military, as a result of corruption.

Crazy. This is basically covered almost real time. How do you even collect so much data in such little time?

Video idea : the Corinthian war and the theban Spartan, and how those 2 wars put an end to Spartan dominance in ancient Greece and allowing Philip the 2nd to expand Macedonia as the main power in ancient Greece

8:57 They have not captured Bilohorivka, only Russian MoD reported on that, but ground assessments confirmed that that was a feint, and Bilohorivka is still under Ukrainian control

Russian bot here. I don't really see where the offensive failed. When it is not immediately clear that this current offensive is about taking Kharkiv, and then the video then goes on to list how Ukraine is going to get aide from the West, is that the part where Russia has failed. I don't see the failure part.

“The first line of fortifications and mines just didn’t exist, ”
— Commander Denys Yaroslavsky
Him and his troops deserve to be remembered. I honestly feel terrible for them. Amazing troops, high command can still get their act together.

You are kidding if you call BTR-60/70/80 new. BTR-60 and BTR-70 were already old and going out of service in 1980s when I served. Yes, BTR-80 were new back then, but it was 40 years ago. Same goes for T-62, T-72 and T-82 tanks.

There's a funny story from the US civil War. There was a New York Regiment that was reputed to be composed mostly of freed prison inmates. When operating near a Confederate Iron clad the colonel of the regiment had the men in formation and asked 'in confidence, does anyone knows how to crack a safe.' supposedly the entire regiment stepped forward.

They have barely mounted an offensive, this is an annoyance. Kharkiv remains sound and Ukraine was able to mount a proper counter offensive following approval of strikes on Russian territory. Ukraine has plenty of land to bleed the Russians on, if this was a diversion, then they have made little use of it along the rest of the front.
