Using An Infrared Camera To Show How Face ID Works

The iPhone X has a new way to unlock your phone. It's called Face ID. When it recognizes your face, it unlocks.

Inside the notch at the top is the TrueDepth camera and sensors. This camera projects over 30,000 dots onto your face. The dots are invisible to your eyes. But you can see them through an infrared camera. The iPhone X's camera analyzes the dots on your face and compares it to the image made when Face ID was set up. If they match, the phone unlocks.

Face ID can adapt to sunglasses, scarves, and hats. It also adjusts to changes in appearance — like shaving. Apple says Face ID has a 1 in 1,000,000 chance of being fooled. We tried tricking Face ID with twins, but Face ID wasn't fooled.

Apple also built an extra layer of security into the phone. Pressing the Power button 5 times will disable Face ID. This forces you to unlock the phone with a password.

This is why it appears as purple on a phone camera video
The infrared hue that the iPhone emits is the primary color before red (I call it Len), and violet, so, the camera takes out Len so we can see the violet light

Careful, many phone have the 5 click set to automatically start dialing emergency services after 3 seconds and play a loud alarm. Source: happened to me. You can easily change it in setting not to auto dial and can also turn off the alarm. Great once I did that! Disables TouchID on older phones. Also, on iphone X, you can just enter your power menu normally to achieve the same result.

Forget Apple iPhone X facial recognition technology. I came here to rave about the music.

This ir camera is literally the Xbox Kinect. Apple bought the Israeli company many years after they discontinued the Kinect. Microsoft used that company before Apple bought it (thus its tech) and licenced/invented this technology over 20 years ago. It was first used in the film 'Minority Report'.

It’s called structured light, and it’s the exact same tech out of the Kinect, just used for identifying faces by the depth of their features.

correct me if i'm wrong.. the camera may be projecting 30000 dots but it certainly looks like only a fraction are actually projected onto the area of a person's face.. the rest of it are 'spillover' and unused?

That rainbow wallpaper gave it away that you are an Apple fan.

I wonder if animals that have ‘night vision’ or capable of seeing infrared can see the lights?
