Math is a language, and the symbols we use in math serve a purpose; to convey a message. Let's say you have 6 apples you want to divide into 2 groups. The short hand for that we've agreed on is 6÷2. Now, if you were to say 6÷2(1+2), how would you interpret that message, given the example of the apples?

For those who's answer is 1, your interpretation of 6÷2(1+2) is that the apples are divided into 6 groups, giving you 1 apple per group.

For those whose answer is 9, your interpretation is that the 2 groups of apples will be multiplied by 3, giving you 9 apples per group.

It's all about who your teacher was and how they taught you to interpret the mathematical message.

It's 9 guys. You always do parentheses first

has no one heard the distributive property…? it would be 1 following that.

Man as a 5/6 grader I can say that these people in the comments don't got that recency buff
When a number is right beside parentheses, you do multiplication
Division and multiplication is equal, so is addition and subtraction, so you just calculate what's first it's really that simple

People keep connecting the 2 to the (1+2) that’s wrong. Because after you’ve done the brackets you do exponents and there are none meaning you go startsight to multiplication and you go left to right meaning the 2 has to be part of the 6/2 which equals 3. Then since there’s no symbol in between you MULTIPLY. Another thing some people here don’t seem to know. And multiplying 3x3 obviously gets you to a grand total of 9. Hope that helps the 4th graders here saying it’s 1

The thing is that division is not fraction.
If it were, 1 would be correct, but it's not, it only divides the next number to it, not the whole block. And parentheses are only what's inside.

2(1+2) = 2x(1+2) = 2x3
So

6/2x3 means you divide 6 by 2, not by 2x3

If you’re not happy, put 6/2 under parenthèses too since it’s a multiplication.

(6/2)(2+1)
Now distribute (or do parentheses first)
= 6/2 + 2 + 6/2 + 1
Since 6/2 = 3 so
3 + 2 + 3+ 1
3 + 3 + 3
9

The answer is undoubtedly 9 for the fact that the order of operation states that you do anything IN parentheses first, then you perform any exponents (doesn’t apply to this problem) and then you do all the multiplication AND division from left to right (if a number is outside a parentheses and being multiplied INTO the parentheses, it counts as a multiplication step) and then at the end you will do any addition or subtraction from left to right.

6/2(2+1)

Rewrite

6 / 2 * (2+1)

Parentheses

6/2 * (3)

Mult/Division from left to right

3 * 3

9

I will answer any questions in the replies but just know, I am right

The people who answered 1 need serious maths lessons 😂
Guys the answer is 9 according to the bodmas/pemdas rule

I was specifically advised by several math and science teachers not to rely on a calculator for order of operations. Even after explicitly buying one that does do order of operations, I had to prove it to every one of them other than 1. (Because he used the same exact calculator model in college)

Even so, the answer is 9 using ONLY the information given to us.

6÷2(1+2)
6÷2(3)
6÷2×3
3×3
9

This is because multiplication and division have the same precedence as each other, similar to addition and subtraction. When this type of scenario occurs, you solve left to right because there isn't anything that is more important than anything else.

However, you will never see the problem written like this in actual math classes because every teacher in pre-Algebra and above will tell you that the "÷" symbol should be written as a fraction. Thus you end up with:

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ 6‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ 6‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ 6
= = = 1
2(1+2)‎ ‎ ‎ ‎‎ ‎ ‎ 2(3)‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ 6

Again though, that is what the problem SHOULD look like. But a properly formatted problem would result in math experts doing it no time, so we ended up with the ambiguous case you see floating online. It less so tests your actual math skills and rather tests whether you are solving exactly what was given or if you are solving the correct formatting of what was given.

First do () which you have 3 6 divid 2 equals 3 3x3 equals 9.

The question is stupid, because most never use this division symbol past the fifth grade, and rather use fractions as it would clear up the confusion. This problem is just meant to rile people up for views.

It’s 9 and 1 but the answer depends on how you interpret the problem because a divide sign can be seen as a fraction
