I hate how everyone is like "THERE IS NO RIGHT WAY TO EAT FOOD STOP TRYING TO CORRECT ME BLA BLA BLA".

What you guys don't understand is, if you go to a very expensive traditional sushi restaurant in Japan, the chef will be highly offended if you eat it the wrong way, some might even kick you out or calling you stupid foreigner. What you guys don't understand is that to the high chefs, who had worked hard making that sushi for you, if you don't eat it properly, you are basically defiling their art. It's ok to eat the wrong way if you go to a cheap sushi place, but not if you go to an expensive traditional place. It's basically the equivalent of taking a piss on the Mona Lisa and the artist is the sushi chef. All these people who say that there is no wrong way to eat sushi probably doesn't understand this. If you literally go to the best sushi place in Japan, and you ask for a California roll and do this, you will probably be banned from the restaurant.

A lot of uptight and defensive people commenting on this video. He's just showing you the formal way to eat sushi. You should be thankful that you are being shown how Sushi is meant to be eaten. This is the Japanese tradition.

I can eat a roast dinner with a spoon it doesn't mean I'm going to cry about someone telling me how to use a knife and fork.

I was told by a friend that "The chef makes the sushi with clean hands, so you show respect to the chef by eating it with your hands." I have no idea to what degree that is considered true.

I was ready to shit all over this video, but he's right. Ginger is for cleaning your palate between plates, the chef knows how much wasabi to use, so doing the whole "soy/wasabi" mix is like dipping french fries into milkshakes: delicious, but pretty feral. Eating with chopsticks thing... well, sushi was originally fast food eaten with fingers, but if you're going to an expensive fancy sushi restaurant, chopsticks are fine, but so is using your fingers. As for ordering rolls... eh, if they offer it on the menu, order what you want... but rolls are mostly westernised sushi creations. (source: lived in osaka for 4 years, more than enough sushi for one lifetime)

I think the point of the video wasn't to offend anyone but just show how to properly eat sushi at a upscale sushi restaurant and not end up offending the chef or make a fool of yourself.

This is very true but it's more for upscale sushi places that actually have table side chef service. Most commercial sushi places in the us or canada aren't seasoned or inspected like crazy real sushi chefs :)

I told my bf don't mix the wasabi with the soy sauce cos he's been eating it wrong . he still won't listen to me and told me he prefer mixing it up and eat sushi his way. he said it's simply just a rules made for ppl but everyone have their own choice and opinion he feel good eating it that way so I just let him be

Lived in Japan for about 5 years and have NEVER, EVER been guided to do that for eating sushi. Even in articles, from Taishos, etc. I agree with soy sauce business, but except that, NO. The origin of Sushi is basically a fast-food to enjoy small amounts of fishes with seasoned rices, not a snobby, thuggish, classy bullshits. It's still a terrible price-amount ratio food, why make that more complicated?

No its not arrogant. Its just a channel that breaks down wrong conventions. Some people want to know, some people don't. Some people want to follow, some people prefer to do whatever the hell they want. I appreciate this channel for what it does.

This is probably considered to be nicest way to eat it, but in the end I guess it's al about your own taste and what you personally like the most. If you like it while dipping in your own shit, go for it!
