Mortuary cannibalism would make a great death metal band name.

Since there have been many cannibalistic cultures I would say our revulsion at eating human flesh is learned, not instinctual. We have many taboos that are ingrained in us culturally throughout our lives, another example is eating insects; most cultures in the world eat insects as part of their staple diets but we are repulsed by the idea. By all accounts human flesh is no different than pork (which is why many fire fighters can't eat pork after smelling burnt human flesh) and is even referred to as longpork. Only the brain, spinal column and spinal fluid are dangerous to eat due to prion risk.

What I want to know is why do prions seem to be isolated to the brain? We have proteins everywhere... we're practically nothing BUT proteins. Yet, we've never found any prions in muscle tissue (thank science) in humans or animals. But why not? Is it a specific structural aspect of proteins which are only used in the brain that make them capable of 'turning prion' when malformed? If so, is that aspect actually important? It seems like it might be, given that they appear in brains of different species, but how exactly?

The Hannibal TV show is one of the best things ever made. Mads Mikkelson and Hugh Dancy make take the mythos to a higher level

I'd like to point out that "Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy" literally means: cow spongy brain disease.

I did a project on three forms of prion disease in sixth grade, and some forms are worse than others. Crutzfelt-Jakob disease and Syndrome sound worse than kuru, and Fatal Familial Insomnia takes away your ability to sleep completely in later stages. Some forms can be passed down in DNA from a parent(the ones I did are dominant disorders) and most cases (85%) appear randomly with no reason at all.

Kuru was also used in the megaflop videogame "Dead island", where a mutated version of the disease made the infected people zombies.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disese basically a prion if im not mistake the best way ihave heard it described is imagine a paperclip perfectly fine and then grab another paperclip thats all twisted and bent out of shape when the twister paperclip comes in contact with the other fine paperclip it twists the fine paperclip out of shape too thus corrupting the other protiens in the brain

When I took microbiology at uni my prof talked about kuru, and said that while you can get it through eating the brain it was not confirmed that the tribe actually engaged in cannibalism and that they could have easily contracted the disease through handling the dead body during the ritual without ever eating it.
