How to Make MCT Easier After Boot Camp

After graduating Boot Camp, Marine Combat Training (MCT) is the next step for non-infantry Marines. Here are a few tips to help you get through MCT and make it a smoother experience.

1. Act like a Marine, not a recruit—How you carry yourself can affect how you’re treated. If you act like you’re still in Boot Camp, your instructors will treat you that way. Instead, show up with the mindset of a Marine, ready to learn and adapt, and you’ll find the environment more relaxed and effective.

2. Invest in good gear—Don’t skimp on boots, insoles, and socks. Cheap gear can leave you with blisters and foot pain, so spend a little extra on high-quality items. It’s worth it in the long run, and your feet will thank you.

3. Avoid getting into trouble—It’s tempting to cut loose, but don’t fall into bad habits like underage drinking or reckless behavior. You’re still in training, and making bad choices can lead to serious consequences. Keep your head down and focus on the task at hand.

4. Enjoy the experience—MCT offers a lot of unique experiences and skills you may not encounter again. Make the most of it, soak up the knowledge, and enjoy the camaraderie. Once it’s over, you’ll look back on it as a memorable part of your Marine journey.

When I was a recruiter I used to tell polees that once they hit the fleet, they’ll look at boot camp and MCT/SOI as the easiest part of their Marine career.

He’s spot on about the boots and socks. (You can ignore insoles, harder is better) I didn’t buy some better boots or socks till I got to the fleet because I didn’t want to put up the cash. But get some Bate’s Lites, they’re gonna make walking around more comfortable and will make the CFT a breeze. And invest in some better socks. They’ll last your entire enlistment.

🗣️It’s a SHAME that Marines have to BUY their own BETTER gear than the issued Government gear. 1976-1982,

Recruit training does not prepare the individual Marine adequately on a physical level for what MCT has in store for them. Also you will not be treated as a regular fleet Marine. You will be hazed a little but it’s fun unless you’re an MP then you’re gonna get hazed REAL good.😉😆

I served in the Marine Corps in the 60s and after boot camp at MCRD San Diego we were sent to ITR (Infantry Training Regiment) at Camp Pendleton. It wasn't hard, just tiring-- a lot of route marching and rifle range. A lot of details as well.

MCT was a decent time compared to boot camp. Yes don't mess around, save it for after completing it. Just act civilized and you won't regret it
