All you have to do is limit the 7950x in BIOS to 140w and or 82C and it runs fine with no heat issues at all.
I did that from day one after watching some yt videos and never had a single issue with heat on a 360 rad.
But doing so I lose about 7% performance over max unlimited power, so.. I guess that would negate its 2% lead over the 3D version.
So probably in the final analysis, the 3D chip is better, but not better enough to upgrade... but if you game a lot or that's all you do, then it's probably worth buying.
I'm going to wait for the 9000 or better series chips before I upgrade.

Whats weird about reviewing this CPU for gaming is ... are you really going to spend all that money on a 7950x3D and a 4090 to game at ... 1080p? I get that the test configuration is setup to test the CPUs, but I hope people out there aren't using these configs just to do 1080p gaming.

I'm trying to decide whether the 7950X or 7950X3D is better for me. I do 3D visualisation and apparently the higher core speed of the 7950X (4.5 vs 4.2) would benefit me more than the increased L3 cache of the 7950X3D (128MB vs 64MB). I also love gaming, but my monitor is capped at 60fps so I don't need a crazy high frame rate which is the main benefit of the 7950X3D.

I hear the 7950X runs quite hot and eats a lot more power when compared to the 7950X3D. Any advise on which CPU to go with?

In the US in mid July 2024, the price is essentially equal, so for a mixed workload the 3D is my choice. But I'm waiting for the Zen5 release to see where pricing goes.

Potential clock speeds come down more to the silicon lottery than anything else, as well as luck on the motherboard and PSU, so I would chalk that one up to that. Beyond that, the X3D is better for tasks that take advantage of L3 cache (rendering, gaming, etc.), but trades off needing more cooling for the more sensitive 3D cache (why it runs lower and cooler) and the issues with scheduling due to the failure of the Windows Game Bar so it can't take advantage of the extra 3D cache anyways. The 7950X in Eco mode is pound for pound one of the most efficient high performing CPUs we've ever seen overall. Thankfully the 7800X3D is an absolute champion, because it only has one CCD so no scheduling issues and gains the advantage of extra L3 cache. Hopefully the next gen will either use something better for scheduling, or they take Microsoft to task and make sure their WGB does its job properly.

This is a complicated topic. I wouldn’t really consider it an upgrade though, it is a “side grade.” You don’t get x3d vcache on all of its 16 cores. What you get are 2 ccds that run on different speed/frequency, as one ccd has the extra 3d vcache for gaming and the other ccd with faster clock speed has a smaller cache, no 3d vcache designed for productivity. AMD shot themselves in the foot by doing this similar to the 7900x3d. Badly engineered, terrible concept. Whoever designed this should be fired for having a half baked, lackluster cpu.

For those looking to use or are using the 7950x3D, would ProcessLasso be a good tool to use? You can designate the game to use only the 3D CCD.

I play dota 2, valorant and cs go and x3d destroys on both val and dota 2, but cs go doesnt benefit much from the L3 cache

I purchased 7950x3D because I leave the computer doing calculations 24/7 so I dont want it to overheat or result in expensive electricity bill.

I would take the 7950X any day of the week. There’s really only a handful of games that actually take advantage of the X3D.

Maybe I am blind and/or deaf but which cooler did you use on both CPUs?

If u arent into gaming or u use ur pc for productivity instead get the 7950x. If u are into gaming get the 7800x3d, forget about 7950x3d it honestly in my opinion shouldnt even exist.
