What’s the difference between Federal police, State Police, and Local Police? This video will answer that question for you!

There are several differences and similarities between Federal, State, and Local police. The way the United States does law enforcement is quite unique, and can be confusing the deeper you look into it. While you may see some uniformity on the Federal level, you won’t see as much of that compared to Local police. And by local police, we mean Town, City, and County police.

If you are interested in learning more about how the Federal police, State police, and Local police work, as well as how they are similar and different, watch this video!

I'm from the UK 🇬🇧 and this has baffled me for years. Here in the UK we have only the Police but now recently the NCA (National Crime Agency) which is basically the UK FBI. Sheriff's and Police boggled my mind. And not to mention a State Trooper. This video helped me understand the insane Law Inforcememt of the USA 🇺🇸

Fun fact, the Metro Transit police department has to have its recruits go through a Virginia academy, Maryland academy, AND DC academy (because the DC metro system crosses State/DC lines) so while I’ll be graduating in 6 weeks, some of my colleagues will still have another 4 or 5 months of academy training left to do (that’s 9 or 10 months spent in one academy or another)

Fun fact, the Texas rangers and the Pennsylvania State Police often compete for the title of the first statewide law enforcement. The reason being is because the rangers often were more military in function rather than actual law enforcement.

A video dedicated to the Alaska State Troopers would be much appreciated, they are definitely an understated agency with many nuances.

Further complicating things is whether your state calls itself a State, a Commonwealth or a Republic. Also, in some states, Sheriffs are primarily process servers at the county level. At the municipal level, a Sheriff is a Constable…

Also, coast guard personnel have unique status of being maritime law enforcement officers in US waters. All of them, not just commissioned officers, but even enlisted personnel.

A video on the different types of CO’s, Deputies, and Jail Officers and what they do would be interesting.

This was one of your most informative videos, for those of us have spent our entire career on AD and not really in the civilian sector. Great work!

One thing to keep in mind is the arrangements between the state and local law enforcement organizations (LEOs) will often vary from state to state due to the state laws on the matters. Some years ago I was doing research for a book and had to contact the authorities in Georgia about how the various LEOs interacted and learned that under their state laws the senior LEO in every county was the County Sheriff, however, the Sheriff usually delegated their authority to others within the county. Where a city or town is incorporated it is allowed to establish it's own police force to enforce the laws within the city or town, but that police force has no legal authority until such time as the County Sheriff issues and authority delegating them the powers to enforce the laws. The same is true for special police forces like a College Police Force. Then you have the various inter-force arrangements. A typical inter-force arrangement would be a College Police Force arranging with the local City Police Force for the City Police to provide the college with Scene of Crime specialist services and arrange for the County Sheriff to provide lock-up services. Because all of this was so different to the way LEOs are where I live I found it very interesting and ended up doing a lot more research than I originally intended.

BTW: It's best to stay friends with your local LEO as you'll see them a lot more than you will the state or federal forces.

You would have the feds on you away because you robed a bank. Financial intuitions usually fall under federal jurisprudence. This is a pretty good video for basic understating of jurisdiction. I really like the fact that it touched on the marijuana laws. Irregardless of how you feel about, its currently illegal under federal law. You might be safe under sate, but DEA will be more then happy to put you in cuff

I like how you break this subject down. It is confusing to a lot of people who aren’t in LE and this video does a great job explaining it is simple terms.

We have a mega hospital in our state. They have Hospital Police who are sworn in by the County Sheriff. 2 Officers per shift are also sworn in by The US Marshals to serve Federal papers on site. They also have snipers since the mega hospital is like a small city with about 4, 000 employees per shift. They have a Bearcat Armored vehicle and a SWAT Team. They get called in by the Sheriffs Office for barricaded mental patients sometimes because the mega hospital has a very large building dedicated to mental health ( Asylum ) and the Hospital Police are quite family with working with the mentally ill. It's a very unique situation.

I would love to see how Detectives do their work within the police. Especially CSI forensics is still a huge secret to me. Great Video.

I'm from Alaska myself and indeed it is more scary to be pulled over by a state trooper than an Anchorage/Wasilla/Palmer Police Officer.
