My vertical ridges significantly improved when I started taking iron for my iron deficiency, though I haven't seen anyone mention iron deficiency as a potential cause.

I’ve had the ridges since a kid but very strong nails nonetheless. I don’t have thyroid issues, confirmed medically. My integrative doctor says it indicates low zink. After supplementing for over two years consecutively and on and off since then, I still have them. The medical community is probably missing something there…

I've had this issue for the past 10 years. However it wasn't until 2022 that my doctor tested my thyroid because of specific symptoms I was experiencing that we discovered I have hypothyroidism. This was so wonderful and I firmly believe that more women (especially) need to ask to be tested. Since Jan of 2023 I have lost 54 lbs and counting. Thank you for this video!!

PSA: biotin can interfere with blood tests and can lead to false results. If you are taking biotin, you need to let your doctor know and ask if you need to discontinue it prior to blood testing so you don't get false results about significant health conditions (like heart attacks, thyroid function, and others).

There is nothing "unfortunate" about aging, it is a blessing and it is a natual progression. The key is to take good care of your health along the way.

I had vertical ridges since mid teens.
Was told it was malnutrition. Needed more viamins and minerals.

First one is due to low stomach acid, which results in low vitamin absorbtion. (Can bee seen in older people as stomach acid tend to lower due to aging as well)

I went to a dermatologist for a brown line on my toe nail i had had for years but had started to widen and he told me to put rubbing alcohol on it everyday and come back. No explanation even when i asked. He just said we'll see how it is then. I didnt not back and I'm looking for a new doctor. Lets hope its benign while i wait.

Im 68 and I have vertical lines in my fingernails. However my nails have never been this strong. They get so long that I can’t hit the keys to text. I keep waiting for one to break or chip so I can cut them without wasting the length, but they never do. I keep them polished - they look really good for an old lady!

this man is absolutely right. I have hypothyroidism. I’m on a drug for it, and I now have a split running down my nail that won’t stop. I am taking biotin, but on a much smaller dose. I will increase it and see what happens. Thank you. I always wondered why.

He is one hundred percent correct. I learned this when I went to school to learn how to do nails. And we were taught that if we saw those dark lines we were told to tell them to go see a doctor immediately.

If you are on a thyroid medication tell ur doc about the biotin . It can interfere when checking ur levels. They may ask you stop a few days before blood work.

Also from washing dishes. Vitamin E to strengthen nails.

So true. Ridges and very brittle nails, that used to be strong, came with hypothyroidism due to Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Just 2 of the many "gifts" of hypothyroidism! 😮
