When I was in college I lived in a party house for a semester. If someone had been in the house at 4 am I would've been shocked due to the time, but I would NOT have assumed that my 4 roommates were dead or that they had been attacked. If I heard crying from a roommate and I knew here boyfriend was in the room, I would assume they were breaking up or were talking about it. Anyone who's judging DM for not acting should reconsicer their armchair detective skills.

They got him. DNA at the scene, cell phone around the scene, and footage of the car on video at the house..good police work!!

CONSIDER: The police had made several visits to this address & had warned them of fines or reporting them to university if they had to come back out. DM, at her age, would have not considered 4 murders but the risk of involving police was a risk.

The crying and the whimpering is just so heartbreaking. I cant even imagine. Jesus please give them the family strength to make it through this. 🙏 🙏

Man Peter. This is breaking my heart already. I'm at the 19:59 mark where you are talking about the camera across the way picking up the sound of a thud and whimper...my heart breaks for these victims and their families.😥

in my early 20s i heard someone break into our house (shared with a couple of roommates). I thought I heard them walk up the stairs; my room was the first one at the top. I didn't hear anything else, and I just froze. I didn't leave my room; I waited until I heard my roommates at the break of day. at daylight my roommate knocked on my door and told me the house had been broken into. I pretended to be surprised but ultimately admitted I heard the break-in. Turns out we ALL had heard the break-in! This was in the days before cellphones so the only phone was in the kitchen. All that to say, given her age I can understand why the survivor didn't take action until much later.

I love listening to your analysis as a defense attorney and listening to Emily as a former prosecuter. It's fascinating for me to hear different points and perspectives and picking different brains.

👏👏👏 I saw a news segment last night with an expert who was speaking an opinion but presented it as fact. It's disappointing that so many outlets are jumping to the gun with judgment without actually seeing the evidence. I love that you go through the facts in law with your discussion. Context is key.

The best part of the sheath being there is not only the fact that their is dna evidence on the sheath of the accused but that sheath was brought into the residence not just anytime in the past but on that night because it is IN the bed with the victims! That is DAMNING!!

I've been losing patience with most of law/crime YT in this case, but your coverage has been more fair and balanced than everything I've watched. Thank you for saying it straight

I think it’s possible DM thought something bad might have happened (maybe a fight) but I don’t think I would have imagined that 4 people were just murdered upstairs.

Peter, your analysis and thoughts are always so spot on. I really, truly am SO appreciative that you’ve always been adamant about being fair, not making baseless assumptions, and most importantly, valuing and encouraging positive, fair and polite discourse. I like that you always say we can disagree and still argue in a polite way. I could not agree more and we need way more people like you; people who are compassionate, balanced and respectful.

Grateful for your coverage and insight on these dark and sometimes uncomfortable topics.

If you're in that situation and your scared thinking the intruder will come back for you, that's why you would call 911, because you think he'll come back for you, also, it would mean you know something terrible has likely happened in the house and your roommates may need help.

when i was a student i went downstairs in the middle of the night a male on couch in room .I got a drink went back to bed asked about him in the morning nobody had invited anyone to stay. I checked downstairs and found a broken window and guy was gone. I was a stupid eighteen year old who thought bad things happen to other people.

DM most likely immediately froze when she saw this man coming down the hall. She locked herself into her room and I'd bet she rolled up into a ball and stayed that way for many hours. It is common for a person in a shock, frozen state to have so many thoughts racing through their brain that they just shut down mentally and react emotionally only. In this case, she froze physically and mentally which prevented her from calling anyone. I think, if I remember correctly, the police said the 911 call came from inside the house, but not from the roommate. She could have called a friend first due to trust issues, told them she was to scared to come out of her room, the friend came over, spoke to her and that friend called 911. Remember, this roommate is late teens/early 20s and immature. Few kids this age are as mature as some seem to think they are. I have PTSD and work with people who have it as well. I was 45 when my event occurred. I went into shock immediately, walked to my desk and sat there staring out of the window for 3 hours before speaking to anyone. It never occurred to me to call anyone. The only thing that kept going through my mind was..'what just happened?' I couldn't figure out what had happened to me, let alone call anyone to explain it. If I did this at 45, imagine what it was like for a teen. It's not ok to blame her for anything. Blaming her is similar to a victim being told she asked to be attacked due to the clothes he/she wore. This is going to affect her for the rest of her life. I really hope she has seen a therapist by now and hopefully someone who specializes in treating people with PTSD. Please don't blame her. Do we understand? No, not now. We have to wait to hear her tell her story and until then, do our best to keep an open mind, send her support and wait until she can tell us what happened.

If I was a juror tasked to decide if someone deserves death, you'd better believe I want to hear *everything* -- no matter how difficult it might be for the witnesses called to the stand.
