I know this is a skit, but this actually came close to happening to me. We came to a deal and I was sitting with the sales guy waiting for the guy who does the paperwork to be available when the sales manager walked up and asked me if my financing was going to produce a check that day. I told him since it was already 2PM and it was the day before the New Year holiday, I would be surprised if they would see a check before the following week, but I had already given them a check for the down payment. He informed me there was another deal in the works on the same vehicle from a different lot, and if I didn't use their financing I could lose the deal. I stood up and asked for my check back. Called their bluff. They backed down and accepted my financing. I despise car salespeople.

The power of saying no and actually being willing to walk away is crucial in a car deal.

This is exactly why customers should be able to buy DIRECTLY from the manufacturer of their choice. No middleman to bend you over.

Once while negotiating he said “if I can get you that rate, would you sign?”. I agreed. He disappeared for twenty minutes and returned with the agreement. Preliminary. I sighed. The day I went to finalize and get the car, I notice, on my own, that the rate was wrong. When I pointed it out he got pissed, saying he hadn’t promised to get me the rate. He had promised to TRY! I walked.

Was about to buy a chevy cruze last year from a chevy dealer, everything was going great and the dude helping me was really cool. Tried to run my credit, stopped him and said I already financed through my credit union. I could hear his soul leaving his body. Didnt buy the cruze from them 😂

Hilarious skit, and true! When I bought my last truck, they asked if they could finance, and I said "well, let's negotiate the truck price, then we can see if you can beat the rate I can get from my bank." My rate was 1.9% Guy just looked at me like I stole his lunch and said "yeah, we can't beat that".

The last car I bought, I told the guy immediately when I stepped on the lot that I already had my own financing and an exact price I would be willing to pay for the exact car I wanted. The dude was so transparent about that not being a great deal for him that we both ended up laughing about it for a minute straight. "Well man, that kinda sucks for me." He did sell me the car though lol.

This is why I only buy my cars in cash. Nothing nice. Just something I can afford. No BS and most importantly NO FINANCING!

It didn't occur to me that the "It just sold" trick was a thing until I saw this video! Had this same thing happen to me one day. Calculated all of the typical costs beforehand, walked in to buy a car, told them I had the money arranged already, then got told that it was sold to whoever another salesman was on the phone with.

They didn't feel good about me asking to take the car to a mechanic for a separate opinion, either. The car was still listed online for 2 weeks after that. I guess I lucked out of some wasted time and money, and maybe a bad car anyway.

This exact scenario happened to me back in 2012 when I was looking for a Subaru Legacy GT spec B. I secured a loan for 4% from my credit union and the Car salesman tried to strong arm me for a 12% in house loan. After about a hour of back and forth calls with the finance rep and their manager, they told me the car just sold. It was on their lot for another month before it finally dissapeared from their inventory.

I used to sell cars. This is all true. I don't sell cars anymore but I do sleep better at night.

As a veteran I swear you hit it on the head with this one. Especially down her in south Florida they say a black person they automatically think “low credit in house financing” till I hit em over the head with the im pre approved and doing my own financing. Then I get hit with either car just sold yesterday, car is not on the lot, or we don’t have the key . 😂😂😂😂
