Transparency is not the problem, the problem is misconception. Not every content made with AI is made BY AI. If a human edits and puts together everything, it's human-made content. But because of the misconception, there is the assumption that an AI tagged video must mean there's no person behind the content. To put them all in one box is dumb.

The removal of AI generated background music that "Sounds" to close to copyrighted tracks is a seriously GIGANTIC issue when you consider that 4 cords on the piano is all you need to play 1000's of hit, copyrighted, songs. They ALL sound alike to a very high degree.

youtube cracking down on AI while creators like Sniperwolf break the law and still get to stay

I don't think most creators using obvious AI imagery or AI voice overs /narration need to worry. I think this clamp down is more aimed at deep fakes, and creators using AI to see what's trending, then write content using ChatGPT, and the whole bunch of AI tools to create a video very quickly and with little effort. Most of which are quite repetitive, similar and don't provide much content value.

YouTube's approach misses the mark in multiple ways. The new policy requires "...creators to disclose when they've created, altered or synthetic content that is realistic, including using AI tools". That is so broad as to include virtually all content. Seriously, what content doesn't trigger the disclosure requirements? And, considering that virtually all major content creation software now includes some AI features, they may as well just put a default disclosure on every piece of content published from here forward. I understand the desire for transparency, but they need to word the policy more specifically than this.

My girlfriend posted a travel video that earned her more than 500 subscribers and gave her over 300, 000 views over the course of a few months. Some random dude from India (we know because he shared where he was from), stole the thumbnail and video, aaand (on top of that) modified her voice (probably with the help of AI) to make it sound like a man's voice instead. She then claimed it as copyright but the guy appealed it saying it was his own... YT then basically said that, if she didnt have an attorney and a document suing the person, that they couldnt do anything about it... She doesn't like confrontation so she gave up. Still, so far, the video has not been placed back on since the initial removal request... Maybe the guy did remove after all? Who knows...

I love AI! Heck, my picture right now is AI generated, but it's definitely getting out of control. We'll get to a point that we dont know if we're seeing and hearing the real individuals, and that is very worrisome.

I'm curious if youtube will give the option to filter out AI generated content or heavily AI generated content or if it will leave it up to the algorithim to figure it out. From a viewer perspective, not a creator, a lot of short form content has become unwatchable due to low effort flooding of AI generated content thus pushing me away from engaging with the medium as a viewer.

No, YT doesn't hate AI. They hate the creators and viewers.

As you said, even Youtube is using AI technology. People have already been using AI technology for a long time in all sorts of fields without having to defend themselves. Video game developers are using it. So using it creatively and sensibly should be left alone and shouldn't penalize creators who use it well. On the other hand, yes, as with all the other trash and unwanted content with or without AI that floods youtube, some intelligent sorting and "control" should be done...

There’s a much bigger problem with AI. I’ve been doing tests with my shorts and now that AI can summarize my content “IT”decides if my content should be pushed heavily or not at all to the shorts feed. I have several shorts with only 2 to 5 views and over 105% retention and other shorts with 10k views but less than 80% retention. The ones that don’t get served are the ones that I know would go viral but it’s like YouTube is censoring content and hiding behind AI to do it.

I'm a big fan of this decision. I've only used AI tools are a central part of content 2 or maybe 3 times early one when I was experimenting with different kinds of content in a particularly rough period for viewership, and they had varying results, but even then I didn't like using it.. made me feel dirty.
Since then I have seen COUNTLESS videos, particularly short form content, that has had 0 effort put into it whatsoever and was made completely by AI, and its degraded the quality of this platform as a whole. I'm glad to see YouTube stepping in on this one to stop the flood of some of this crap.

I hope they don't ruin it for people like me who have had to put off doing YT due to vocal issues. Using AI makes YT content creation accessible to everyone. My dream is to make money from doing this.

What about using paid, realistic, (and not cheap) AI voices for faceless channels featuring our original videos? I fail to understand their response to that.

I had a chance to talk to some of the Team YouTuber members about this, including the head of YouTube Canada. One of the other creators there recommended them adding a checkbox similar to the paid promotion one, which they said is one of the things they are considering. There is a bunch of work being done towards this, so most likely we will see a lot of changes and updates to how and what needs to be disclosed.

Isn't it interesting how there is a double standard between artists and musicians?
Musicians get rights, but artists who invented many art styles can only cry in the corner...
This exploitation and double standard is disgusting!

I think the purpose of these regulations is to prevent deepfakes/dangerous misinformation that could be used to start wars or protests. Despite the concern for faceless automation channels, I don't think YouTube is worried about AI automation as it would be hard to prove. That being said, it makes me glad I still do all of my own voiceovers and script-writing (manual voiceovers are more engaging anyway).

I hope the ai warnings will be customisable. I write my own stories and illustrate them using ai images which I then spend a lot of time and effort on with photoshop. “This content created by ai” or similar will imply that my writing is also ai. That might put a lot of potential subscribers/viewers off. I always say in the description that the images are ai. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

I'm fully with YT's decision here, especially the part where they mentioned they want to regulate the imitation of recognized faces or voices by using AI tools. Nowadays, AI generated voices are very common while the owners of the voices have little to no control of the usages.

YouTube is thinking ahead regarding the A.I. generated content but they still haven't re-enabled user-selectable thumbnail for Youtube
