How Do I Fix This Painting Disaster? 😬 #oilpainting #art

Ahh! What do I do now? I tried to varnish my oil painting of a squirrel eating a piece of pineapple pizza. The squirrel doesn't like trying new things, and apparently neither does the canvas.

Even the squirrel was disgusted by the situation LOL

Also big tip, don’t pour it on your canvas like that, it ruins the painting and the entire point of varnishing. You want to apply thin, even coats with a brush!

my best guess wouldve been an oil based versus water based conflict but hearing you used the appropriate varnish is confusing me further. usually i go to reddit for info like that because 1) someones always asked the same question before and 2) people in the art communities are SUPER helpful and informative

In my experience oil paint can take months to cure before its ready for varnish, too early and worse case scenario it solutes the pigment making smears if it's not fully dry/cured

The look of disgust on the squirrel's face is really just the cherry on top.

Also I'm so sorry. I hate when you think you've reached the end of a project and it goes totally south like this 😭. I know you'll figure it out!

The frantic brushing over a squirrel having pizza with the dramatic music too - I laughed a lot but also felt really bad - I hope it turns out okay!!

The music coupled with the panicked swiping of the brush, tied together with the disgusted face of a fucking squirrel is just so good. Art

I mean at the ending the wet parts honestly really gave a good esthetic to the squirrel like you could really feel it’s tongue salivating from the pizza

I’ve literally sobbed, actually bawled over stuff like this. Especially when you’ve been working for hours at a stretch to power through and finish a work, and then shit happenes and you feel the all consuming despair closing in…

I learned the hard way to first test before applying to the final piece haha

I‘m a car painter, and this can also Happen with water based paints, i think this could also be the same issue tho:
Too much varnish (clear coat) in one go, so the base paint can‘t take it all. Try going in a few, thin coats with appropriate time between (not dry, but a Little sticky)

Also make sure you let the base dry completely, that could also lead to adhesion and/or cohesion issues

Even the animal in the painting is disgusted…

Had this happen with some stained kitchen cabinets. The paint on canvas may not have been cured long enough and was causing varnish to repel. This can happen with oil on oil if im not mistaken. Some people will spray a layer of shellac before the clearcoat to prevent this

Coming to the acceptance at the end is so relatable.

Aside from varnish issue, that is a damn adorable squirrel.

Put more varnish on then, those blobs happen because air is pushing it out. Fill those air spaces up with more varnish.
