Foot injuries can be classified as ligament injuries or bony injuries. By the term ligament injury, the ligament which connects the bone to the foot might be injured or there might be fracture in the foot. The ligament injury will usually heal in about 6 weeks’ time. We usually advise them a crepe bandage or a plaster or an air cast or a protective boot on which they can walk. The different types of treatment will depend on what the ligament injury is. If there is a fracture, it will depend where the fracture is, what the fracture is, how bad it is and if it is displaced or not. The fracture will take about 6 – 12 weeks to heal. During this period, the patient will be advised to have a slab or a walking cast or an air cast to walk around with. If the patient does not take such precautions, there is going to be considerable amount of pain and I would advise not to walk around with a protective cast or a boot or an air cast. So during this period the patient is advised analgesics for a period of week to 10 days. Keep the foot elevated over a pillow so that the swelling reduces. Not to keep the foot down for a long time because the swelling and the pain might increase. If the treatment is just by a crepe bandage, then it is advised to remove the crepe bandage for 2 – 3 times in a day and apply ice packs over it so that it reduces the inflammation and the pain.
