My mom is a professional caregiver and she dealt with a lot of people who suffered from dementia. She has to be direct but for some reason, it always works. She's able to make them do what is needed. The most dangerous problem is when they escape and you have to pray to find them safe and sound...

Many older people-even people who are intellectually intact-loathe taking advice or help from their children but it feels fine to take it from friends. So in working with people w dementia, as others have said, it's helpful to have a caregiver "suggest" ways that might work for the person and appeal to their common sense that they once would have had in abundance. I say "you'd told me that you like to wash your hair every day. You've always been a clean person. Do you feel like showering now?" It appeals to who they always had been.

I was a hired caregiver of an older woman with Altzeimers. She was a very interesting person who'd lived a fascinating life. The way her daughter helped me handle the situation is a learned a lot about her. And we pretended I was her friend-this is when she could live alone with help. I figured if she wasn't ill, she actually was someone I'd be interested in knowing. I think she saw my respect for her. She'd take my advice that she couldn't take from her daughter or son. The key was to maintain her dignity and her autonomy as much as possible in giving her choices. I loved that job.

Giving the elderly a purpose in general is so important... Makes them feel like they are still needed. Not just for patients with dementia

I absolutely love these videos. So many people have no idea how to cope with or manage when a family member gets dementia or Alzheimer's.

This creative problem solving is so kind, and I'm sure will help plenty of people from having to figure it out the hard way. ❤❤❤

All you need to do is humor them & since they don't remember stuff you pretend that the hire is actually an old friend she doesn't recall or even a relative.

I've been watching your videos recently- ever since my grandma was diagnosed with dementia. She is not able to live at home anymore. I wish I could be with her, but I live out of state. Your videos give me hope that my grandma can be happy even
as her health declines.

My Mother wouldn't agree no matter what you said. It's a big reason I finally put her into nursing care.
