How I Learned | Self-Taught iOS Developer | Tips & Resources to Learn iOS/Swift

I was asked how I found my way to iOS Development and so thought it would be great to share that with anyone who might be having the same question. I talk about how I first got interested and the steps I took to explore that interest. Through sharing my experience I also give some tips and resources that I think are good to hear for anyone who is just starting their own journey or feeling a little stuck.

Now, this is no way where it ends for me, and lookout for a video coming soon where I explain where I'm at now and what's next in my story.

---- Resources I Have Used ----
1. iOS & Swift - The Complete iOS App Development Bootcamp by Angela Yu
2. Hacking With Swift Website
3. Hacking With Swift - 100 Days of Swift by Paul Hudson
4. Hacking With Swift - 100 Days of SwiftUI by Paul Hudson

I totally agree with "once you learn the basics, move on to developing your own app idea" I can totally relate to this advice and 100% recommend it. Great video!!

A lot of devs just stick to tutorials and it's almost maddening to see they don't really learn from them, so it's really refreshing to hear from you and your great journey.

Hey Tianna, you and I are on the same boat. I started out exploring web development and I find these courses tiring and too much to take in. I sort of had an eye on iOS for a good long while now and seeing you talk about your experience is so refreshing to hear. Please post more videos and possibly tutorials on iOS development. Thanks!

Your words are really encouraging as I am learning Swift. Thank you for posting.

Tianna,
I cannot agree with you more. Especially with once you get the basics, abandon the tutorials!
Coming from a background of game development, a large portion of other learners would fail to become competent game developers because they would stick with strictly tutorials and pray they'd become developers by the end.
The approach of leaving with the basics and jumping straight into a project is golden advice.
Amazing video.

Wonderful advice. Diving into it after learning the basics is probably the best way to learn, at least for me and many others.

This is awesome. Similar story to mine. I think most of us are self-taught! There were no courses back then!

I also chose Swift cuz web development seemed too unapproachable for me. Thanks for sharing your journey!

Hi Tianna, thank you for your video, I'm in a position right now that I'm lost as an iOS developer but watching this video remember me how I started and what I have to do next. You're awesome! Keep it going!

Is the pravacy rule of the Apple Store very difficult to follow for a beginner?

Yea I went through Yu course a long time ago also and didn't finish ended giving up. Cause what I wanted was to exit the minimum wage industry.

So I knew I was fairly knowledgeable of IT so I went ahead and earn a cert. Shortly after got a job as a technician.

MOST IMPORTANT PART
Now I want to chase my passion to code again, and like you, I think Web Dev is too much, and I know how controlled iOS is. So I'm currently using Hacking with Swift for 100 days right now. I'm still mostly taking in content like Enum, trying to wrap my head around it.

I appreciate your opinion and will be following your content for more.

Learning is one thing and getting a job is a whole different thing.

Today I am excited! I purchased and picked up my MacBook Air today, so I am ready to make X-Code applications. The only catch is I am thinking I am doing too much, and I may have to decide which path to go with? At the moment I am taking a course on Udemy for Full Stack developer learning JavaScript, Php and Python.
Let me ask you a question? The reason why I am stuck with the decision to go 100% into iOS development is because I've invested so much already into learning these 2 languages and web development and the strongest reason mostly because I keep on hearing to become an iOS developer is really difficult because it's hard to find a job. From your experience is becoming an iOS developer harder than getting a web developer job in NYC or it's about the same?
This may sound crazy but maybe I could continue the Udemy course primary and invest at least 30-1hr into learning SWIFT and X-Code? What would be your adviced?

I hit the like button when you said Angella Yu's bootcamp. That course is excellent.

I agree to a certain extent. You should stagger tutorials like full boot camps. Learn, build, learn, build, etc. Like I’m taking Angela’s course too but I plan on finishing a big majority of it cuz it has design and marketing in there as well. And these jobs now expect you to know multiple frameworks outside of SwiftUI.

Cool story! I have a few questions: 1. Did you find it necessary to pick up some objective-c in addition to swift? And 2: Did you learn any back-end server-side languages/technologies in order to land a job?
