The "It is like a switch got flipped in my head and I can hear everyone" is a very accurate description of the greatest motivation I have for learning a language. These glorious moments when you hear or read something and the meaning of it just pops into your head without struggle. By itself. Like magic!
Thanks for the video, aki :)

If it's possible to learn an entire foreign language in 3 months, anything is possible.

I've lived in Japan for 30 years. It took me 2 years to be functional, 5 to be conversational, 15 to be fully literate.

For kanji, i love wanikani. It limits how many kanji you can learn within a certain amount of time so that you don't overwhelm yourself

akidearest just saved thousands of people's lives and their time for making this video. We've all been there trying to learn a new language. Now I can finally learn Japanese quicker and make more progress than ever.

I have such a hard time with self discipline. And having to go out and look for ways to use what I learned (like with the Italki app) just makes things harder. It’s not like being in a country where lots of people speak your target language, or even being in a class setting. Learning a language really is just SO much work, and can be discouraging when you feel like you’re doing it all on you’re own…

I think patience and motivation is key. I taught myself from nothing until I passed N1 level without ever stepping foot in Japan or talking with a native speaker but it took time and dedication. It took me around 6 years.
Then when I passed N1 I moved to Japan and my speaking and listening then just naturally improved through living life here and now I don't study the language anymore its just a natural part of me.

My biggest recommendation for learning language is always MUSIC! The more you play a song, you'll pick up on words and phrases, especially if you actually look up the lyrics and read the Japanese! Plus you can get involved with the fandom for whatever band you listen to and read comments to boost your reading skills! Honestly it's just so fun and doesn't feel like work, I wish more people would talk about it

Since Joey is a fluent speaker, I’d highly suggest only speaking Japanese when at home. It’ll help expedite the learning process.

I like Aki and appreciate a lot of her dedication to learning Japanese, as somebody who's been studying the language for over a year myself. But I disagree a lot with her premise on textbooks. Genki in particular can seriously help people learn the basic grammar and vocab, and the textbook is actually structured really well for this. Especially when paired with a vocab software like Anki. Not everyone is as lucky enough to live in Japan and date a fluent Japanese speaker like Aki is. Especially during the pandemic. It really just takes self-discipline more than anything to learn Japanese.

I remember the moment I realized I no longer had to translate in my head, what was being said from Japanese to English. I could just simply understand in Japanese. That was a very exciting moment for me!

“Minna no Nihongo” has been my gateway to learning Japanese too. It truly is quite an immersive material and can be quite daunting. So I’m currently breaking the lessons down into easy bite-size pieces in my channel, from Beginner to Intermediate level. 一緒に勉強しましょう!😊

Three months is crazy! I'm 37 years in and I still learning something new almost daily. Keep up the great work.

This was super helpful! Thanks for taking the time to make it. I immediately went and downloaded some of the Apps and am looking over some of the books you mentioned that I don’t have.

Practice and immersion are key. During my time in Uni learning Japanese, we had a minimum 30 min, 3 days a week in the “language lounge” requirement for all learners regardless of level. I spent at least an hour, five days a week in the lounge, just talking with the Japanese exchange students. This paid dividends.

When we all went to Japan as a cohort, I was one of two allowed to leave the group and go off on my own intermittently because our prof knew I could handle things solo.

Corollary: if you do not practice regularly, your skills will suffer quickly. I lament that I’m not as 日本語上手 as I used to be.

When you were talking about textbooks and workbooks, you mentioned the workbooks you had were like if Genki were a workbook, I wanted to mention that Genki does actually have workbooks that are meant to correspond to the lessons in their textbooks. We used Genki in my Japanese classes in college, both the textbooks and the workbooks, and they worked well for me.

This really helps out a ton! I started self teaching myself in freshman year of high school because I wanted to read Japanese manga that I knew would never be translated in English. Then I went to take some college courses. And now I’m a dual language teacher reading Japanese manga during my breaks. It’s incredible!
