I've always played with a pick but the low tension grip on the pick is a lifesaver. I tend to hit the strings a little harder than average (I'm playing for metal) and with my previous grip my thumb would start to ache really quickly. It'll take some adjusting, but that little piece of advice is going to save me a lot of strain.

Paul Stanley This applies to extended range basses too (like this 5 String Bass both of us Have) because the strings are closer together & using a Pick might make it easier to strike the strings.

I'm confused. You said to focus on rotating your whole forearm but then when you actually played at 1:57 you pivoted at the wrist. And how is the pick supposed to strike the strings cleanly when holding the pick that way makes it almost perpendicular with the strings themselves? Especially if the bass is hung lower then it is at such an angle to the body that I can't figure out how to pick the strings while holding it like that.

I find holding the pick like this to be kind of a strain is it bad if I continue to hold the pick with my thumb, index, and middle finger or do you suggest I try to learn this way?
