Those are the 5 most important patterns to learn on both guitar and bass guitar.
Make sure you first know where all the 1’s or roots are. Next make sure you can label all the b3’s, 4’s, 5’s, and b7’s.
- Now here’s how to expand that:
1) first learn to add in 3, and to slide (always upward) from the Bluesy minor 3rd to the major 3rd (IF you are playing over a Dominant 7th chord; do not play the major 3rd if it’s over a minor chord).
2) Now learn to add in the 2’s and 6’s (which can also be used, just not quite as easily).
Now you have turned those 5 minor pentatonic boxes into Mixolydian boxes plus one extra note; here’s that formula: 1-2-b3-3-4-5-6-b7.
3) There are only 4 notes left: b2/b5/b6/7.
The flatted 5th is part of the Blues scale and is very useable. The b2/b6/7 are the least useable but can be used as chromatic passing tones (you’re just going quickly through them most of the time, on your way to another note).
Here’s how you took those 5 minor pentatonic boxes all the way to the chromatic scale:
1-b3-4-5-b7, 1-b3-3-4-5-b7, 1-2-b3-3-4-5-6-b7, 1-2-b3-3-4-b5-5-6-b7, 1-b2-2-b3-3-4-b5-5-b6-6-b7-7.
Now you can play any note on the fretboard without getting lost because those 5 CAGED shapes are your “skeletal” framework.

I can tell it's Dan' Hawkins video just by his hands without seeing the subscription. He is my all time favorite Bass player I go back to the 70s.

That's so cool Dan, thanks big time. In the final shape high up, what does the two G white boxes represent?

Sounds really nice, I wish I could do it. Maybe if I had started when I was 12 and had spiders for fingers...
I have arthritis. I'll stick to playing along with Status Quo and ZZtop.

New to your channel. Do you have a video like this breaking down pentatonic shapes for a 5 String Bass with a low B?

It's my dream to learn how to play bass, but I don't have any and can't afford it:)

How am I supposed to recognize that they are G major pentatonic scales? I know that's because the root is the G, but since you don' always start from the G, I'm finding it hard to understand what is the "main structure" between them, I'm confused about it :(
