That 2 and a half minutes probably felt like a year.

Fun fact: Robert was one of very few doctors who practiced cleanliness. And he very often got ridiculed for it. Back then, the more blood on your apron and gloves showed that you were more experienced. He was also the one to create some new medical tools, and anesthesia! I suggest you check out some videos on him, as I find him an very interesting man

As a leg amputee myself, I'm really glad I was born in the 1990s and not the 1790s

As a surgical technologist, I will say the surgical instruments used for amputations nowadays haven't changed. I have used an amputation tray with those very instruments.

Honestly, him trying to be as quick as possible was the best thing he could’ve done for the patient.

For those wondering- the 300% mortality rate was a surgery where the patient died of infection, his assistant, who had his fingers accidentally amputated during the procedure, also died of infection, and an onlooker apparently died of shock.
The average surgeon doing the procedure had 1 in 4 patients die, but Liston only had 1 in 10.

Hearing that they used tweezers to pinch out their blood vessels made me the most violently uncomfortable I’ve ever felt

Here in the small town of Bailey, North Carolina where I'm from we have a museum called the Country Doctors Museum where you can see all of these tools mentioned above along with many other tools of the time. At one time it was the only museum of it's kind here in the USA.

Amputation without anesthesia is what’s happening in Gaza to all ages. It’s happening today. 💔

And he was one of the only doctors of the time who washed his hands before surgery
