Hollywood writers on strike: How does it affect series and film production? | DW News

Thousands of Hollywood film and television writers have gone on strike, after talks between major studios and the powerful writers' guild failed to reach an agreement.

Writers say their income has been reduced by online streaming services. The strike could shut down television talk shows, and delay the release of series and movies set for autumn. It's the first major writers' strike in 15 years. The last one is estimated to have cost the California economy more than two billion dollars.

We talk about the strike with Scott Roxborough from DW Culture.

IDK, but by the quality of things produced nowadays, I'd think they were on strike for longer.

This is news. I thought they'd been on strike for 7 or 8 years already. (Judging by the comments I'm not alone)
Now how to get the producers, casting directors, agents & pretty much everyone involved in the movie business except costume, grip & catering to go on indefinite strike ?

Considering the quality of TV shows and movies over the past decade, you could replace every writer with an AI and not notice the difference.

The Hollywood writing is so bad that they should pay me for the time i lost watching the movie. Sometimes i can't believe someone is investigating millions in something so bad.

That's a beautiful news. Too bad Netflix writers don't strike. No garbage is a good news.

TV Talk (excuse the pun) shows shut down, great I hate them. In reality There is so many channels/programs available (not to mention Internet) would anyone actually notice.

We can only hope that no new film or tv series comes out of Hollywood.

One thing went down and hardly anyone noticed. The writers criticize that their payment is measured by success. This is quite amusing and shows quite well the mentality of today's writing. There have rarely been as many flops and poorly written series as in the last months/years, but these writers still want to be well paid. Good stories have always been well paid, but now karma is finally hitting back for the bad and ideological writers.

All they do is remakes of old stuff anyway.

Films and tv writing has diminished in quality in recent years, formulaic and boring. When the writers strike will anyone notice?

If AI writes better movies I’m fine with it.

Hollywood did this to itself!😒
They keep having shows cancelled and movie losing money because they sucks !
and why are they ?
Because they prioritise their woke ideology above character development and stories!
When you more bothered to fill up diversity quota and push your own messages, obviously you will get cancelled, obviously your movie will lose money in cinema, obviously, your company will suffer financially, obviously you won't be able to pay your writers fairly and obviously they will go on strike because they need to pay their bills.
Hollywood need to learn, just look at the new Top Gun and the recent Mario Bros movie .
You want to make some money, give to the public what they want no what you want !

I think I would rather see a show fully developed by AI at this point.
