“Ranger grave”. Sounds useful and a great recommendation.

None of these were images of hasty fighting positions.

Skinned my hands raw from digging Ranger grave (fox holes) from basic training to the various specialized jungle trainings I went to...I've slept in em, eat in em, and got bored hanging out in em and just stare at the jungle. As a vet of both Operation Just Cause and Desert Storm, I never get to dig a single fox hole in both of those operations.

100yrs later and our best option of frontline warfare is still a soldier in a good old trench!!

There’s a reason we called it a
“Ranger Grave” lol. Because once you stop moving and dig in you are just waiting to die.

The British infantry called it a shell scrape which could be scratched out in about 4 minutes, quicker when under fire.

During the Cold War the most useful position we had was in a bar in Germany.

Ranger Graves are hastily dug positions about the depth of an unfolded E Tool.
It is dug for the soldier to lay down. One short side facing the threat.
Dirt is piled to the front and one side using the rucksack as frontal protection also.

The soldiers buddy digs his close by and stacks the dirt of the opposite side and front.

Typically these are used for places that are not going to be occupied long say less than 12 hours.

True fighting positions with overhead cover take a good amount of time to dig and most units wont dig them unless they are in defense mode and going to stay in place for 72 or more hours.

Good way to piss off the troops is have them dig full fledged positions all night and then say fill them in, before morning chow.

I remember a ftx where we had dig fighting positions in accordance with field manual 5-15 field fortifications. It was a thing of beauty with perfect interlocking fields of fire for a platoon size element. After it was graded we had to fill it back in, all this was Done with E tools. After that experience I completely understand how a soldier can brutally kill someone with a entrenching tool.

Ranger graves are distinct from foxholes. Way we were taught in the army is, ranger graves are called such because you dig them flag, only a foot deep at most with an incline downwards where your feet go for comfort and stability. It affords you shorter dig time because you can fight prone, whereas foxholes take more time because you're digging vertically, thus you run into issues like roots, clay, etc, and in wet environments you need to make a sump as well. Foxholes can take you six to twelve hours to dig to appropriate depth and diameter if you're alone with nothing but a tiny lil e-tool. Ranger graves? An hour, tops. You get less cover, but you're prone, so either way you're a harder target. Best part is that if a grenade gets tossed into your grave, you don't gotta leap out of the grave, just roll out of it like a lil tumbleweed.

Ranger grave has multiple functions! Gotta love that

It’s not the best fighting position. Hasty literally means quick, and working with the situation at hand. A deliberate fighting position is better because you’ve had time time to prep and establish the position

This video is unintentionally a example how how much better the OCPs are compared to the BDUs when it comes to actually being in the field
