This video is a step by step tutorial on how to troubleshoot, diagnose, repair and fix a computer that won't turn on. When a computer won't turn on there are several tests we need to verify if the computer has no power. We need to start on the external environment such as the power outlet and power cables that connect the computer to the power source. After we made sure that these are working its time to look into the internal parts like the power supply (PSU), Power switch, and motherboard. The video will walk you through these procedures.

Spent an entire week trying to get my new build desktop to start. Though the power supply was faulty . Your video allowed me how to determine that the power supply was working. Turned out it was the effing front panel connectors. I have an ASUS Q connector from my first build 6 years ago but it does not fit MSI MB. Thank you

The most straightforward to the point and super helpful and descriptive video i've seen yet! Not even the popular youtubers have made a video this thorough for beginners. Well done! and Thank you because I'm trying to isolate why my computer is not turning on.

Thanks for the vid, it saved a work computer from the trash, for now at least. Turns out it was just the power switch

Thanks man! This vid helped me and saved me a lot of money. Someone commented here and has the same problem as mine. We thought it was the motherboard because the psu is working and the switch wasn't even if we do the jumper thing. He said someone here also recommended replacing the CMOS battery first and it did, my pc worked and so as his.
Just sharing this experience to not jump right to conclusion first about the motherboard being faulty. God bless y'all!

Thank you a great simple 1, 2, 3 approach to solving what can be an incredibly baffling problem. However sometimes it may not be so black and white. I'm posting this to share experiences. In my case the paper clip test proved that the fan was spinning leaving the switch or the motherboard. The jumper test for the switch did not work so it left the motherboard. That was the only conclusion to left. However the spinning fan on the PSU didn't feel right, it felt weak. On impulse I had another power supply and so swapped it over and bingo, everything lit up and worked. The PSU therefore although working was in poor health. See comment by Peter Judd. In this case assuming a faulty motherboard would have been the wrong diagnosis.

Excellent, straight-forward video! You solved my problem - it was a bad power switch. Thank you.

Very useful video to help beginners, but there are a couple of things to add to make it even more effective. Some power supplies don't spin their fans until they get above a certain temperature or power load. Also, the power supply fan spinning, doesn't indicate the full health of the power supply. You also need to test the various dc power outputs of the power supply, like the 5v and 12v lines. You'll need a multimeter for that though. The reason is that quite often the fan will spin, but the power supply won't be giving out the correct voltages to power on the computer. If your computer does power on but then completely shuts off while doing something like gaming, that can also be a symptom of a failing power supply or just a power supply that isn't sufficiently powerful for your computer. As a side note, be very cautious about buying cheap power supplies, such as the ones in this video. Most are junk and some are potentially dangerous and can cause fires if overloaded. One last point, unless you know what you are doing, never open the power supply case unless you want to risk getting a very nasty and potentially lethal shock.

I tuck the power box out of an old computer to use as a malty tap power supply i.e. 3.3V, 5V, 12V for a bread board and Arduino projects.
I had power to the box and through the on-off toggle switch on the box but no power out or fan movement, so I followed your instructions, joined the green and the black pins and it now works. Thanks to your video you've saved a lot of electronics from the scrap bin.
