Watches one drywall video out of curiosity.

YouTube algorithm, oh so he's getting into the drywall/painting business. Send him the DIY beginners package!

Done it for 20 yrs or more. Nothing at all wrong with what you've done. Would like to see finished product.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. I always mesh tape my patches. They turn out great. 🤘

So refreshing to see someone do this properly

Former pro here. Mesh toe all day for patches or you don’t know what your doing, especially ceiling. If you have fresh board than go with paper but mesh is the answer for patches except in angles.

This is the only ceiling repair I found with a texture and paint existing condition. So it was the only one I found useful. Thank you very much, tutor!
All the other similar DIY vids are patching what appears to be just completed drywall and are completely useless.
Thanks again!

THANK YOU for not wasting my time! Great info, and it's the first time in a long time that I've seen one of these where the poster didn't ramble on and on and on and on...

A lot of people don’t know that when drywall was becoming popular using a damp sponge while it’s wet was the intended method. Not sanding after trying to get it perfect. Also yeah the mesh tape is solid, people who say it cracks every time don’t know what they’re doing/talking about. As well as people who say matching texture will always show.. can be done, pretty easily too if it’s a texture that’s somewhat common..

What are the benefits of using any kind of tape in a wall repair?I don't know

I know some don't like mesh tape but as long as you're using mixing mud it works fine. Premixed mud, because of additional ingredients, prevents the tape from sticking. Good job

Plumbing access panel is the smartest since, but... You cut the whole...why didn't you cut it to the center of the joists and forget about the extra pieces of wood? Or put them at 90° and make the repair that much mls secure.

Excuse my ignorance, I did a repair on a wall like this a few years back(only one I've ever done) except I didn't use any tape at all. Just put the furring strips, joint compound and repainted and it's been fine. Am I supposed to see an issue by not having used tape? 3yrs running and it's been solid.

Paper tape is for old timers, mesh tape holds joint compound way better and it keeps it from cracking.

What type of installation did you use? I am repairing drywall from a bathroom shower leak

Mesh tape is fine if you use fast set. It's much harder than premixed. It only cracks if you only use premixed. I've done mesh and fast set to do hundreds of fresh hung rooms and just as many patches, never had an issue.

the backing for the patch not necessarily have to be 2x4 because in the future if another leak happens will be more hard to open again

What about replacing the drywall on the ceiling Afterwards? I will have to remove everything from the room then clean the dust and put it back after the drywall is removed. I don't want to have to do this twice. Is replacing the drywall as messy as cutting it out?

I’m out on mesh tape. Too prone to failure, especially with all the lightweight drywall and lightweight setting mud these days. Cracks will show through in dry climates or if you push on the wallboard. Expensive mistake if you’re all trimmed and painted. Paper tape is best.
