3 Months OFF the Wrist: Tudor Black Bay Ceramic - Service update

Well you’ve paid your money, your fancy watch breaks almost immediately, and now you’re at the mercy of the manufacturer’s goodwill to sort it out.
For now I’ve lost three months of enjoyment on a brand new watch. I have no idea what the issue is, whether it’s one lemon or part of a larger problem. I don’t know if a part or the whole movement will be swapped. I don’t know if it will be METAS-certified again. I worry that service damages will be visible on a watch that was pristine and therefore devalue it instantly. Apart from getting a new watch, which might bear the same issue, I don’t foresee a good outcome and it’s additional stress I didn’t need.

The watch industry is a bad joke. This level of service wouldn't be tolerated anywhere else. I just can't get my head around it. I think the only company even worse than the "desirable" watch brands are McLaren. Keep up the good work and stay safe - best wishes from Bangkok!

I really feel for you, dude.
Seeing how you’re getting shafted like this is making me rethink getting a BB58 hey.
Awesome watch, but it comes with a shit customer service aftertaste.
I don’t need that. ..
And neither do you. 🍻

What a saga! I asked James and Jason at The Grey Nato podcast about the Kenissi service model, which is that they swap refurbished movements instead of repairing your movement. They confirmed that this is the normal service model (so many people didn’t believe it on various forums). However, J and J added that you can request that your Tudor is serviced the traditional way, meaning Tudor/Kenissi service staff take apart your watch, clean everything, replace worn parts, then put your movement back together and put it in your watch. But that style of service will take longer. Surely Uptick’s ceramic is one of the first to be sent back with problems, so as he mentioned it’s unlikely there are any refurbished movements to swap in. Tudor most definitely should have just given Uptick a new watch, while his broken one should be analyzed in detail at their leisure to see what the heck went wrong.

That strap is not comfortable in hot weather, ... so they kept the watch the whole summer and sent it back in autumn, I believe that is the whole issue. Chapeau Tudor, great customer service 😄.

This side of the watch ownership experience definitely adds some additional perspective on why Rolex is the brand it is today

Like i said timely again.. My Tudor 58 also had this same issue.. Wait for 2 months, got engine swap, sold it and have stayed away from it ever since. Got much happier from off the shelves movement.

No way I would buy a Tudor after hearing about this experience. Totally unacceptable.

Speaking from experience Im not surprised. I had a Pelagos that ran amazing for 4 months bought brand new and then it went completely erratic 7s style.

I’m really sorry for your experience. I have a few $3k and 4k watches, but stories such as these are all too common. And it’s making me rethink spending more than $1k-1500 for any watch. The prices we pay aren’t really logical any more. These watches are way over priced and I’m starting to feel foolish for being swept away in the hype of a luxury watch.

Same thing happened to me. Waited 6 months. Got a damaged watch back. They finally replaced the watch after seeing my YT video.

I don't know if this has been stated yet, but according to many AD's this watch is very hard to come by, currently. Allocations are extremely slim. My AD got one watch for the entire year of 2021, and aren't expecting any more until 2022. I don't think it's any artificial scarcity nonsense, but more likely just a production issue, maybe with the METAS certification. My guess is that they are planning to "fix" your watch by swapping the movement, but they don't have any new METAS movements to swap it with yet. This could explain the delay in your repair, however it's still frustrating. I expect that once they iron out these supply/production issues on the BB Ceramic, these issues will be solved, but for now it's still a very new watch in limited production numbers.

Any other brand new product would’ve been replaced with a new one by now. Why do watch enthusiasts put up with so much crap? You paid thousands for a watch that has spent more time with service than on your wrist.

i have this watch for 2 weeks, So far i have no issue and love wearing it every day. I feel sorry for your bad experience, i hope you will get a brand new replacement from Tudor.

METAS certified should mean something- an assurance of quality. To Tudor it seems to be just a marketing gimmick- as opposed to OMEGA where the quality is there.

Got call to pick up bb gmt same day as your last update. Needless to say, turned it down. Bet I'm not the only one

I have owned mine for 6 months with almost daily work wear as a maintenance technician with no issues. I have a pool so I swim with it regularly. I have been inside the ocean inside cold plunges Ian had tubs and I have never had a problem with this watch and it has always stayed within three seconds of accuracy either way. Hopefully my luck continues and this is just one bad example.

Must come under the sales of goods act, faulty item means replace, repair or refund. An I right ? I wasn’t sure buying my bb58 if I wanted an in house movement, as this sort of thing goes on. On the plus side Tudor bb58 service cost is around £300, that’s what I was told by AD. Good luck with your watch . 👊🏻
