Distal radius fractures can be treated without surgery if the bone fragments are minimally displaced and remain in close connection. I cried tears when I saw this, in 1984 I was in a bike accident an fractured my femur “lower third” they put me in the wrong traction which caused a DVT and instead of operating and pin and plating my leg they put me in a toe to hip plaster for 5 months when they cut it off my leg was shaped like a banana so you can imagine how I felt I was a 25 year old man who thought his life was ahead instead I put up with people staring at me they still do I met girls on blind dates that made excuses and left I’m 62 now but I still get stared at and people laugh I just wish you had been there I know I could have had my leg 100% straight but it just seemed like nobody could be bothered.

This is almost exactly how mine broke. Mine splintered down the side about two inches and also broke along the growth plate on the other bone. Mine was fixed with a horizontal pin and smaller plate. Doctor called it a dinner fork break. Feels good in the cold 😂

The importance of getting the articular surface as congruent as possible is why you would do this. However plates and screws can cause a space problems. Once you damage an articular surface like that arthritic changes will eventually occur. External fixation could also be an option.
