I got so frustrated with my first emt scenario test. It went like this:
"You arrive on scene and there's a man with his arm stuck in a machine. And go."
"What kind of machine?"
"It doesn't matter."
"Uhhhh, yeah it does. Is it a hydraulic press? Or some kind of farming implement? Is his arm crushed, skinned, amputated? Is it his whole arm or just the forearm? Is he bleeding?"
"It's does not matter. What do you do?"
"OK, well, start off with scene safety. Then assess airway, breathing and circulation. I'd then start...."
"Your patient is dead. He bleed out while you were asking all these questions. What do you do now?"
"Uhhhh, I guess I'd just try to figure out in what universe does any of the last 5 minutes makes sense."
"Keep studying."

My applied med class does trauma scenarios at the end of the day. We’re split into two groups, one stays in the room and the others have to leave and have no idea what is happening inside. The group in the room either decides or is assigned injuries and must act the part, we can only tell them what’s wrong when they ask us certain questions. Our instructor only gives us the items we need and we are left to figure out who needs what and “save” them within 1 minute. I ended up as a victim with both legs amputated and the instructor had me hide in a cupboard covered in things so they actually had to find me. I’m pretty sure I bled out, they didn’t find me until the last 15 seconds and somehow lost one of the tourniquets.
