What is your favourite expression in Dutch?

That's what we asked to the Dutch language students at the Dutch Summer School...

Ik gebruik ‘op die fiets’ zo vaak en ook in ‘t Engels en Duits, dat mn vrienden in t buitenland gewoon weten wat t betekent. Het grappige is dat de Belgen ‘m blijkbaar niet kennen dus nadat ik t al tig keer gezegd had zei een Vlaamse viend heel trots ‘ooooh zo gaat die fiets!’.

I studied on Crete and remember that my foreign friends all loved the word "uitbuiken" after we'd enjoyed a good Cretan meal with local meze. Some of them *still* use it, almost 17yrs after the fact 😄.

In what way are our expressions more weird than English ones? In English you have: "It's raining cats and dogs", "Beat around the bush", "A piece of cake", "Over the moon, "It's gonna blow your socks off"... shall I continue?

Hallo meneer de Pau.
Ik hou can uw filmpjes. Zij zijn goed om Nederlandse cultuur te ontdekken. Ik weet sommige zinnen als ik heb andere video's van u gekeken. In Spanje, men zegt "A caballo regalado, no le mires los dientes". Dat betekent hetzelfde als het Nederlandse gezegde van het paard. "Je dik achterna lopen" kan betekent "pensar con la entrepierna (polla)". Ik wist er niets van "een engeltje pist on je tong". Dat is grappig voor mij. Ik hou echt van de volgende uitdrukking: "met de deur in het huis te vallen". Een vergelijkbare vertaling in het Spaans is "ir al grano". 😃
Ik hoop dat jullie deze uitdrukkingen interessant vinden, omdat ze niet hetzelfde zijn in het Nederlands, maar ze hebben dezelfde betekenis.

By the way, "Zand erover" isn't explained very well. It's more like an alternative to "water under the bridge". It's often used to forgive a minor transgression. I'd describe it as "You know what you did wrong and I know your intentions weren't malicious so let's not waste time and energy making a big deal out of it.".

Funny that one we use in the US. We say “Don’t kick a gift horse in the mouth”. My favorite American expression is “They don’t have a pot to piss in”. Relating to a person always bragging about their possessions or the like. My Mom used it often.

Kiwi girl that just arrived back home in New Zealand here and she said, while she was in Amsterdam, she learnt a Dutch word and said: Fuck All.... ik schrok me kapot. No she said, Fakkel (as in torch) OOOHHHhhhh jaaaa jaaa ...LOL

"Mit der Tür ins Haus fallen."
