One of the best parts of learning a foreign language is laughing at literal translations. These are usually found in idiomatic expressions.

Top 10 Dutch Expressions

1. The first expression literally means “To fall with the door into the house”. In Dutch, we say “Met de deur in huis vallen”. This expressions means to get straight to the point.

2. The second expression literally means “As if an angel is peeing on your tongue”. In Dutch, we say “Alsof er een engeltje over je tong piest”. This expressions is said when you are really enjoying your meal.

3. The third expression literally means “Now the monkey comes out of the sleeve”. In Dutch, we say “Nu komt de aap uit de mouw”. This expressions is just like the English saying “to let the cat out of the bag” meaning the moment when the truth behind something is revealed.

4. The fourth expression literally means “To fall with your nose in butter”. In Dutch, we say “Met zijn neus in de boter vallen”. This means to be at the right place at the right time.

5. The fifth expression literally means “Did you fall down the stairs?”. In Dutch, we say “Ben je van de trap gevallen?”. A Dutch person might ask you this odd question if you have had a rather drastic haircut

6. The sixth expression literally means “I can’t make any chocolate from that”. In Dutch, we say “Daar kan ik geen chocola van maken”. This is similar to the English expression ‘It’s all Greek to me’; meaning that you can’t understand something.

7. The seventh expression literally means “What have I got hanging on my bike now?”. In Dutch, we say “Wat heb ik nou aan mijn fiets hangen?”. This is a way of saying “What’s going on now?” or “What do I have to deal with now?”

8. The eight expression literally means “We will certainly get that piglet washed”. In Dutch, we say “We zullen dat varkentje wel even wassen”. You say this when you will take care of something, or get the job done.

9. The ninth expression literally means “to talk about little cows and little calves”. In Dutch, we say “Praten over koetjes en kalfjes”. You use this phrase when you’re not talking about anything important or in particular.

10. The last expression at number 10 literally means “Now my wooden shoe is breaking!”. In Dutch, we say “Nu breekt mijn klomp!”. Use this expression when you’re totally amazed and don’t expect something.

Instead of 'did you fall from the stairs' we usually say something like 'heb je gisteren de grasmaaier gekopt' or 'heb je de grasmaaier er weer overheen gehad' which means something like 'did you headbutt a lawnmower?'
