My favourite us something really basic: “ Leuk “. It looks nice. It sounds nice. And it perfectly describes its subject.

So in the Netherlands it’s “magnetron, ” which sounds really cool, and in Belgium it’s “microgolfoven, ” which basically means “microwaveoven.”

In België zeggen we microgolfoven in plaats van magnetron. Magnetron klinkt inderdaad als een soort van sci-fi wapen of transformer :D

I never realised that we say "HiFi" in the English way, but with "Wifi" we Dutchify the pronounciation. Very strange, actually.

My favourite word is brandslang...which means firehose in English...but if you split it in half, brand is fire and slang is snake...hence, firesnake!

Hello Bart.
The woman who said "magnetron" nailed it. She explains it perfectly. I was also surprise to find out that it was microwave the first time I heard it. Anyway, it has some logic sense under the word. It might refer to the magnetic waves it used to heat the food. "Magnetic = magnetron". But yes, it sounds like an electric weapon or something made of metals. 😁
What strikes me is "verrassen", because I didn't know that existed the word with one "r", "verassen". That could lead to a macabre misunderstanding (but perfect for this Halloween. You can verrasen and verassen someone in this festival. 😂). Dutch people who pronounce the "r" sound guttural as French might find it hard to distinguish both words when they speak. Fortunately, the context shows which one is meant.
"Pannekoeken" reminds me of a teacher who called us "cebollino/a" or "cebollón/a" when she was angry. The first one means "little onion", whereas the second one is "big onion". Dutch word sounds much more sweeter. It doesn't look like an insult.
Finally, I never heard that "swaffelen" word. Of course I didn't, I have never been in The Netherlands, but I haven't heard it on Dutch TV, which I sometimes watch. I'm surprised by hiw many dirty words Dutch people say. Dutch seem logical, responsible, well-mannered, etc. But their vocabulary is quite different. I won't complain because Spanish are even ruder. I swear a lot myself. 🤬😅 It was funny to learn that word. I'd like to know something. Is "swaffelen" used only in situations when a man uses his part inside a non living thing like a wall, or is it used when having sex with people too?
