What Happened To Kamikaze Pilots Who Wimped Out?

The use of Kamikaze pilots in World War Two is one of the more disturbing aspects of the war. To convince these pilots to die for their country, the military employed several tactics from propaganda to peer pressure, to alcohol. However, the survival instinct is quite strong and many did wimp out. Although urban myth claims that Kamikaze planes only had half a tank of fuel to stop them from returning this is not true. Many Kamikaze pilots would return, citing technical issues or heavy enemy fire as reasons for not completing their mission. They weren't usually punished and would be sent back out again, but if they returned too many times it was very likely they would be executed.

"Hey man, I don't think you should fly after all that drinking. You're liable to crash your plane."
"Let's hope so."

In 1979 when I arrived in Japan I met a Japanese Christian Minister. During the war he was high school student and had made three attempts at making kamikaze attack. Each time they never found the American fleet, so they flew back to Japan. He had been trained to fly and land by his brother a Navy pilot. His friends were never trained on how to land and only to takeoff. Their fate was sealed. He became a Christian after the war.

It kills me that all these new age historians get it so wrong. Kamikaze pilots were a last ditch effort toward the end of the war. Japan had lost all its experienced Pilots. That is why they were trying to use the whole plane as a bomb as it was easier for the kamikazes to fly the plane into a ship then to try to teach them how to Target a ship with a bomb. So if the kamikazes decided to drop their bombs and come back they were merely liquored up one more time and sent out again. This is in many Japanese and American history books. If these new age historians would actually learn actual history instead of just making s*** up it would go much better.

They were between 14 and 19. They were children. They thought they would go straight to prison and were told to purposely aim the plane to the ship heading and die immediately. Sad.

I always thought the canopy was bolted on and they had no parachute.

Given the high death rate of Japanese pilots late in the war due to limited training and planes significantly inferior to their opponents, kamikazes make a certain kind of sense. If you're likely to get shot down and killed anyway, may as well try to take out a major target.

Masabumi Hosono was the only Japanese man on board the Titanic who survived was condemned and ostracized by the Japanese public, press and government for his decision to save himself rather than go down with the ship. He died in 1939.

Why is it more disturbing than Allied bombing in Europe with an aircrew fatality rate of 60%?

By the time it was employed Japanese bombers had essentially no chance of survival against allied targets and an even lower chance of causing damage.

The landing gears were rigged to fall off after take off so they couldn't land, there's an entire book written by a Japanese general on the subject, The kamikaze pilots had no choice but to crash after take off

“Wimp out” is a funny way of saying “using their brains and senses”.

Boy, some of the crazy crap people come out with associated with the Kamikaze pilots is full on urban myths and straight out ridiculous.

Some did try a number of things to avoid death such as not being able to find the target. It may well be that some landed the aircraft somewhere in Japan and disappeared.
