Kamikaze Pilots had one job. Introduce and crash their face (and plane) into the deck of an American Aircraft Carrier or Battleship. They were a late addition to Imperial Japan's arsenal during the latter years of World War 2 when they desperately trying to stop the United States from defeating them.

So what happened to these young pilots when they failed and returned to their bases? Were they punished or just sent back out on another mission to sacrifice it all for victory. Find out in this video, the latest in my very short animated historical documentaries (about history).

History matters is really good at giving lots of context which makes his 10 minute histories really dense and informing.

Why would they have their best pilots be Kamikazes?
Because at that point in the war, EVERY mission against the US fleet was a suicide mission. The loss rates were so appalling that a new pilot had basically no hope of surviving more than a couple missions no matter what their intentions, and what little survival was to be had was luck rather than skill. So, if they're all going to die anyway...

Military History Visualized and/or Military Aviation History have videos that take a more detailed look at kamikaze strikes and the reasons why, but a short summery is that a conventional attack would already cost most of the aircraft and pilots sent on it anyway. It was suicide for any air attack on the Allied fleet at this time.
