Would you still need to harden it for aluminum ?

Do we still need to harden 10.9 grade metric bolts?

Very handy for running through things like suspension mount captive fasteners in particular!

Excellent stuff!

It's informative, clear visually and audio too. And succinct. Wonderfully well done. Thanks.

Well done. There have been a number of times I needed a tap of an odd size, and this will be a big help. Thanks for the details of the hardening.

Did this exact thing just with a hacksaw instead of a grinder and with vegetable oil instead of salt water. Worked really well actually. The bolt seemed to bend a tiny bit when I quenched it but it didn't seem to be a problem.

Did anyone try to make a tap for M3 (3 mm)? I couldn't find taps this small sold separately. Also, do I still need to harden the metal with a blow torch (if the thickness is only 3 mm)?
