After the chamfering and first start up using hand double check that piece and the tap are perpendicular then use the tool for the tap and the first thread instead of using the tool to avoid swinging and to prevent the start up damage.

Not quite enough explanation to be useful for me. What are the 3 taps? I can only guess they come in a set meant to be used that way, with exactly the same thread pitch, but going deeper each time?

Why do you check with a tri-square? The tap is going to follow the hole. Checking angle is only necessary when cutting external threads with a die.

Q about measurements. What is the ratio of hole size to screw size. For instance, if I want to cut a threaded hole to accept a 1/2" bolt, what size pilot hole would I drill? I am assuming something smaller than 1/2". Is that right?

You did not specify the screw size in mm(international world wide standard) matching the drill bit size.
