Growing FIG TREES Indoors: Top TIPS

Growing figs indoors is not easy, but with a will there's a way. If you can definitely put them outside! If not, do yourself a huge favor and provide supplemental lighting. Grow lights running 16 hours a day will certainly make a big difference. Feed heavily and limit the number of fruiting branches your fig tree has every year.

I decided to move some small potted figs into the house as they near harvest time. This is to prevent all the animals from eating my hard work. Curious to see how this goes in the final stretch of ripening. I have to say, I grin each time I see them sitting there.

Love the indoor help on the fig trees. If you are ever in Long Island, I have tons of compost from my wood chips that have been there for 3 1/2 years. It’s arborist Chips ( compost) from the trees that had to be cut down in my back yard. It’s like gold for the garden.

Ross, I found this video looking up figs/indoors/winter. Last spring was my first year with a violet de bordeaux and chicago hardy in 5 gal pots. I brought them inside for the winter, put them near a window and the vdb is doing awesome! Beautiful leaves and growing figs! Looks much healthier actually than how it did outside in the summer. The chgo hardy is less active so far, but getting new leaves. I'm curious if I should just leave inside even in summer, why not?

I wonder, I think if those older figs were removed, the plant could focus it's energy on keeping different things growing, like the leaves and branches (those take longer to grow but they can also always be trimmed back.) In the summer the fig naturally will produce figs, they grow fast like small tomatoes. So a trim, this allows the plant to redirect energy to maybe growing it's roots and leaves. 🌸 happy growing, always (:

How do you put the tree into dormant?
You mention the tree needs to be dormant, but did not explain how to do it. I mean the temperature indoor is constant through out the year. The plant won't know the season has changed.

does hours of sunlight effect the taste of the fruit?

Do we water them while they’re dormant?

Well, I'd better be looking into some lights because at 63 I guarantee I won't be hauling plants in and out. Thanks for the heads up.

You forgot to mention if it has woken up and the juice is flowing, all hardiness is gone! If transfered outside be sure that all frosts are gone.
