I “Switched to Linux” after using MX Linux on a live USB. I used Windows for 25 years and just got fed up with it. I cannot comment on Mint because I have never tried it but what I can say is the MX Linux just works for me. I find it very user friendly.

AND, I also mentioned the fact about live MX LINUX changes transferring during install, when you select SAVE LIVE DESKTOP CHANGES. And you can customize your installed system, and then snapshot it as a live CD/USB again.. Kinda like a mirror in a mirror in a mirror.. MX magic..

Thanks for posting this. I have two laptops: One on MX Linux and the other on Mint XFCE. I figure if one of the distros take a left turn, I will switch it out so I always have two distros I can count on.

There is an option to save all the modifications you made during the live session so that they are kept when you install the system.
The way you installed the latest version of LO is dangerous because you have defined in a permanent way a new source for your packages (buster backports).
The way MX does it through the MX Package Installer is to enable temporarily any source other than the stable branch and then to close that source once you have installed all the packages you wish/need from that source. The MX way prevents you from getting a borked system.
You have forgotten to define a priority through apt pinning for the LO package.
Cheers

Excellent video!! Excellent distros. I have these two distros on one of my machines. My other machine is running Debian lxde-lxqt. It's super fast and easy to use. Love it!! Did you review Debian lxqt?

I used to be a linux mint fanboy. I really liked the way everything worked out of the box. The community had solutions for basically every problem out there and at some point I just got used to linux - after a while I uninstalled every Windows partition I had and only use Linux operation systems ever since (even on my work laptop - which runs tuxedo os, an ubuntu based distro by tuxedo computers). I know how to update my system, I know how to compile from source, I know how to partition my hard drive so that I can easily switch distros without losing my /home folder every time - this is who I am as a linux user right now.
A few months ago I noticed that my old laptop was having a hard time using windows 10 with all the updates and new features that came with it after not using it for basically a year - i.e. online-conference software out of the box, cloud stuff, weather apps, etc. and my laptop was gasping for air. So I searched for a new distro for old laptops that can also be used on new hardware and which is similar to ubuntu/linux mint and I found MX Linux which is also based on Debian, just like Ubuntu. I also wanted to try antiX Linux but did not have the chance yet since MX Linux worked perfectly right away and I could not bring myself to uninstall a perfectly working operating system.
It is super fast, I can use all commands I know from linux mint, except the command-aliases such as "ll" but I now know how to define those myself (and you should learn, too).
A few weeks ago I tried Fedora since I heard it's wonderful but for me it's a bit unstable. I enjoy the stability of my debian based systems such as tuxedo-os (based on ubunut) or mx-linux and so I installed MX Linux on all my other machines.
My bottom line: if you are a beginner you can use either or. Personally after switching to MX Linux I have no ambition to go back to Linux Mint. You have a good documentation and a large community that helps with problems. And you can even use debian / ubuntu based search hits to fix your problems since it's all based on Debian.

My laptop does not have much power (4GB RAM, dual-core 1.1GHz processor, no dedicated graphics card) so I switched to Linux Mint from windows 10. Mint seemed to run slightly better than Windows 10. Then I switched from Mint to MX Linux and the performance improved dramatically. Everything loaded faster, and I could watch HD videos! Something that as far as I know, was not possible on Mint or Windows. So yep, I'm a MX fan, and I would recommend MX to anyone.

I'm laughing at some of the comments. The only reason to distro hop is because you prefer the philosophy and direction that particular distribution team has or uses. If your hardware isn't working on MX Linux or Mint, change the kernel. Drivers are stored in the kernel, so either you need a newer or previous kernel. @SwitchedtoLinux - Tom I am surprised on your writing computer you are not running LMDE4? It's a work computer, not a daily driver...

Im very very happy with Mint for a couple of years now but recently saw this going up rapidly and got my curious. I like its actually based on Debian (I use Debian but only for servers, not in my desktops). I don't think I would swich Mint with it but Ill check it out. Thx for the video 😃😃😃

It all depends on your pallette and use. I gave other distros a try (Ubuntu, Mint, etc) on an almost 3 year old laptop with very decent specs, and MXLinux did the trick in terms of speed for an average user.

For those who mentioned Windows, the only thing I miss from MS is Outlook. Till this day I have not found an email client as robust as Outlook (or at least Outlook 2010).

Thanks for the vid.

I like both of these distros a lot. With Mint XFCE the desktop works in a traditional way - you can put folders on the actual desktop. In MX-Linux I think you have to work through the files icon on the taskbar which is perfectly fine but different. However, I only used MX-Linux for a day or two so I might have missed something ...

Just tried MxLinux and it doesn't have the ethernet/wireless drivers for my newer B550 motherboard. Gonna try the ahs version and see how that works.

I'm an MX user but made my switch from Windows to Linux using Mint initially. After several years of distro hopping and leaning more about Linux I setttled on MX but also have a love for ArcoLinux. Your presentation was fair and balanced. Appreciate your videos.
