after 300 years? Catalonians pick the wrong side? They voted in 1978 with a 90% supporting the constitution, they also voted in 2015 in their local elections presenting it as a referendum and they reached 47% for independence (after a campaign based on hate, xenophobia and lies)!

Please journalists, do your homework. How many times are they going to vote?

OMFG NBC, Catalonia is the part of Spain that receives more money even though they don't have the largest population, and they also have the largest debt. That fact that you said that Catalonia receives less money than what they pay is completely false!!

300 years? That's not true. Spain wasn't born then. The first Spanish modern state came in 1812. And the first big kingdom union a la UK, came in 1492.
And Catalonia didn't choose the "losing side" in the Civil War. As a region full of industrial burgeoise, there were A LOT of franchoists there, as in the rest of Spain. The ones who lost were the low-middle and working classes, in Catalonia, in Castille, in Asturias or Andalusia: EVERYWHERE IN SPAIN. But you know, this bourgeoise still rule Catalonia, so it's better to say that Spain as a country was the fascist enemy, than to say Catalan bourgoise was part of the fascist criminals.

Good resume, although it is missing a lot of information and mixing concepts. It wasn’t the government who declared it illegal, it is illegal because of the constitution. For me it is something that needs much more than 2 minutes to be explained, it is a really complex issue, not easy to compare with Quebec or Scotland either, because of historical reasons.

Thumbs down for not having any analysis on the reasons ... do they really give more than they take?

The Mexican Americans have more claim for independence on the whole western part of the United States than the Catalans will ever have in Spain. If you would argue that cultural, ethnic and historic dwelling governs the right for independence, then the Mexican Americans have a much stronger claim for claiming the entire western United States as an independent country from the United States of America, the United States of Mexico and the Kingdom of Spain, for that "historic" matter! So, if you think Catalonia deserves independence, then just give all the western United States to "La Raza" Chicano Power - Mexican American, and recognize it as the Aztlan Nation.

The Catalan argument fomenting this independence movement is based on corrupt politicians wanting to break the law in hopes of keeping fraudulently obtained funds.

Most of the Catalans are not independentistas but we are afraid to show Spanish flags. There is no democracy in Catalonia if you are not a nationalist.

Catalonia is about 15% of Spain's Population and contributes about 20% to the economy of Spain. I support Catalans in their quest for autonomy and independence but wonder if the success of this venture might not provoke similar violence and repression on the part of Spain. It has happened before. Llarg Catalunya Viu!

"The problem is that Spain's Government opposes the vote", says the NBC. This is false. The vote is illegal because the Spanish Constitution states the integrity of the territory, so it's not the government opposing anything, but the democratic law. By the way almost all Constitutions in the world include the integrity of the territory, including the US, Germany France and so on. The Constitution can be changed follow democratic procedure in the Palament, which is where democracy resides, but Catalans separatists chose to break the law instead.
