The Newsmakers: Catalonia's Struggle for Independence

It could be a nuclear option that leads to the breakup of Spain. The semi-autonomous region of Catalonia wants a referendum to declare its independence. But blocking the way is the federal government, judges and nationalist protesters.

Catalan leaders have given stern warnings in response. It's being reported that if a vote doesn't happen in September, they'll be no more protests, no more court cases. Catalonia will unilaterally secede. Observers say that could spark a national crisis in Spain, and quite possibly in the European Union.

I am from The Faroe Islands. Of course it is not our business if Catalunya is independant or not. BUT it is the business of all democratic people that the people of Catalunya can hold a referendum. The present central government in Madrid is not democratic, and little better than old Franco and his regime. David Cameron was democratic and allowed Scotland to hold a referendum in 2014. Denmark would not like The Faroe Islands or Greenland to leave The Kingdom of Denmark, but they would allow the peoples in The Faroe Islands and Greenland to hold referendums about independance. SO Mariano Rajoy is a non-democrat. Shame on You Madrid.

People from outside Spain who support the Catalan nationalist movement do it mainly out of sympathy as, in their eyes, they are a minority group demanding 'freedom' from an 'oppressive' majority (Spain). Humans tend to side with minorities over majorities (David vs Goliath) but this doesn't mean the minority group is always right. The Catalan nationalist movement is, like all nationalisms, rooted in selfishness, supremacy of their own people (we are superior than Spaniards), victimhood, bigotry and xenophobia. They try to sell their movement to the international community with nice euphemisms as peaceful, democratic and noble cause fighting for freedom and independence. Nothing further from the truth. Their movement has gained momentum in the last 5 years due to the economic crisis in Spain. It is a selfish, racist, coercive and xenophobic movement disguised as 'democratic'. "Nationalism is an infantile disease. It is the measles of mankind" - Albert EinsteinHace 1 día•20

Catalonia was not the last region to fall to the fascist in the Spanish Civil war. LIE!! Madrid, Murcia and parts of Valencia, and Castilla La Mancha fell after Catalonia. Catalonias independence movement doesnt have anything to do with the civil war. I stopped watching after that. Misinformative video, not well documented.
