Catalonia’s independence movement, explained

This referendum was not the region's first.

On October 1st Catalonia held a controversial referendum on independence. Before the vote took place, the Spanish Constitutional Courts ruled the vote illegal and sent the national guard to stop it from happening. Despite government opposition, the vote was held and clashes between voters and police ensued.

Ninety percent of the participants voted in favor of independence, but public surveys say that current support for independence in Catalonia is only 41 percent.

Despite the contested referendum results, Catalonia has declared independence unilaterally. In response, Spain is moving to dissolve the Catalan regional government, remove its leaders from office and hold regional elections.

Ironically Spain's right-wing party is called VOX, not really relevant to the video, just thought it was funny.

Catalonia won't become an EU-member because all of the current members have to accept catalonia, and Spain won't do that if they manage to get independent

Don't forget that spain has a veto right in the EU. So if Catalania would become independent and apply for a EU membership, Spain could veto and keep them out.

That's what every country does, the richer states or regions support the poorest within the country, that's how it works.

Richer regions support the poorer regions of a nation, that's how nations work.

Taxes in Spain are paid NOT depending on the region you are, but the amount of money you earn. Spain do NOT tax Catalans more than other regions.

so, catalonia asked EU for help to separate from Spain while spain is one of the most well-respected members in EU ?
that's like if palestine asking U.S to help fighting Israel.
you can't get more wrong from that

All I'm thinking about is its consequences on La Liga

I mean, isn’t that how a country works? New York gives money to Mississippi to support the other parts of their country, England gives to Scotland and Wales, Mexico City gives to Chiapas because that’s just how nations function

I thought Basque have more differences to Spain than Catalonia?
And if tax is the problem, imagine this.. Do you want metropolitan city seperate from farmland just because farmland pay tax less than metropolitan city?

Congratulations, I'm from Spain, this video explains really well the situation. Although there's some information missing, this is the most objective explanation from a foreign media channel I've seen so far.
