Regarding the British habit of buying cargoes, British Law being what it is, and British Courts being what they are, simply seizing the cargo could result in the Captain of the seizing vessel, his Admiral and possibly the Government itself being sued for unlawful seizure.
Buying the cargo at a fair price precludes all of that, and so long as the Navy employs someone who knows his business to sell that cargo on, they should make a reasonable profit on the proceedings.

Interesting whizz through the basic concepts. Couple of observations : The CSA was cobbled together at the last minute. It didn't have an "economy" distinct from the rest of the USA, just the dominant interests were those of the slave-owning plantation owners. It had no capacity to plan a domestic transport infrastructure, initiate large-scale industrial works etc prior to the war breaking out (some semblance was eventually attempted after a couple of years of war but it had little impact.) In terms of blockade southern planters initiated a "King Cotton" strategy of refusing to export cotton to put pressure on European nations to support the CSA. (This is a form of blockade - but from the other side, ie exporters stopping exports at source.) King Cotton failed and the Union control of the seas made it nearly total. As for China - I read there is the "Great Firewall of China" - the Chinese government trying to control internet usage among its own citizens regarding international connections - although it doesn't have total control and certain sectors have freer internet access where it benefits the Chinese government, military or the economy. The Chinese govt 's restrictions can negatively impact outside firms ability to trade inside China.

Nice vid, a lot of food for thought. Regarding submarines not being "commerce raiders" (as opposed to being "besiegers")? The diff being imo that commerce raiding is a random thing on the high seas not necessarily tied to a blockaded or besieged shore. But on the other hand, what the US fleet boats did to Japan, was a blockade that was also not unlike a siege. In later '44/45 the US subs were not spending their time sinking 60-foot sampans because they wanted gunnery practice, it was because they were the only targets that remained. A new strategic category altogether perhaps? Not sure.

Was the blockade of Naboo by the Trade Federation a close, or a loose one? What is the rule of thumb, when the scale is much bigger and instead of weather you worry about gravity?

Chapter XIII. ESCAPE OF INTERNED ADMIRAL GRAF SPEE OFFICERS FROM SOUTH AMERICA
After the scuttling of the Admiral Graf Spee, Wattenberg was brought to Buenos Aires on December 18, 1939, for internment with 1, 054 officers and men. The officers were required to give their word of honor not to leave the city without written permission from the police authorities, but refused to do so. The German Embassy attempted to have the Graf Spee survivor's declared "shipwrecked" to avoid internment, but the fact that the Germans had made arrangements for vessels to pick up survivors before the Admiral Graf Spee sailed for the last time caused the Argentine Government to insist on internment.
By March 16, 1940, 31 officers and men had escaped; it is believed that Wattenberg escaped on April 16. At the end of July 1942 the number had risen to 120. The German Embassy provided forged passports, and other false documents were procured by a German resident of Buenos Aires named Alfonso Haun, who later confessed his participation to Argentine police. The exact route taken to Peru by Wattenberg is not known, but planes, busses, and horses for crossing the Andes were used by various other prisoners. At Callao, Peru, he embarked on the S. S. Rakuyo Maru, a Japanese steamer, which stopped at Los Angeles on June 12, 1940. Spanish and Japanese vessels, as well as German blockade runners, were used by escaping prisoners. Wattenberg reached Germany without further incident, and before long it was reported that he had joined the U-boat arm.

I believe the Souths wealth was based on the value of the slaves. thier value and cost was worth much more than the value of thier crop production or the land
