Then explain why it was part of the file explorer.

Recall IS running in the background on both of my NON CoPilot PC's. I disabled the service via terminal. But is there, its running.

I personally think Windows is an incredibly useful operating system with a fantastic ecosystem of services and applications; however, I personally don't like the direction they've been taking with it's development. They increased system requirements, deprecated local accounts, buried control panel, implemented ads and annoying push notifications, and they've even added restrictions on Windows 10 activations. It got to the point where investing in migrating my workflow to Linux made sense. I'm not trapped with just one option. With regards to recall, I think a lot of people took issue with how it was initially presented. They've walked back some of the missteps, but first impressions are hard to undo.

Windows already collects enough data for us to be worried. If we really will be able to disable Recall - which I think we will - Windows will still collect the same amount of data, as it has always done, and forward that data to Microsoft HQ in Redmond.

There are no real stats for Linux users because Linux by default doesn't have telemetry. That being said, the best source we can find indicates that Linux users have actually doubled in the last year, which is actually insane because that's never happened before. It cracked 3% and then 4% within 12 months. That is literally exponential growth.

1. “You’ll be able to uninstall it”
Yeah, through command prompt… there’s no official setting or anything for it or a program you can uninstall, just through command prompt. Why would they go through the trouble of making it harder to remove if they weren’t so keen on users actually using the feature? Plus Windows updates would re enable it and not tell the user.

2. “Recall requires more powerful PCs, it’s not coming to every PC”
Microsoft themselves have stated that Recall is going to be a feature for every Windows PC as a part of the 24H2 update. There are plenty of videos displaying concern for privacy and security and rightfully so, even tutorials showing you how to turn it off. So no, it doesn’t require a “more powerful”
PC, they’re looking to make it compitable with every Windows PC, which is scary.

3. “It’s encrypted and stored locally”
This doesn’t matter. Recall is the definition of spyware and if they can get access to it, they will. People using the camera in your home analogy is perfect. Just because they say all of this shit like “it’s encrypted”, “it’s opt in”, “don’t worry we’ve made sure it’s totally safe”, doesn’t mean that you should take their word for it.

4. “It’s the Linux conspiracy theorists trying to push hate onto this feature and prevent people from using Windows”
My guy Microsoft is doing it to themselves. It’s privacy and security concerns that make this feature a deal breaker for most users. Some on this very platform have shown this feature is very easily hackable. And I for one care about my privacy, so I switched to Linux and I’m using Windows for things I absolutely have to, since certain developers of certain programs don’t want to support Linux for some reason. And I’d argue since this feature has gotten so much backlash and people realize how much of a threat to their security it is, people are bailing out and starting to use Linux instead. It’s not “conspiracy theorists”, but rather people who understand how dangerous this is and educating people about it. And with devices like the Steam Deck showcasing just how easy Linux can be to use, it got people to make the switch.

Unfortunately, you’re right, some people won’t switch to Linux over this feature, but that doesn’t mean they don’t like it. Some people either don’t care or what they do needs Windows to work and they don’t want to jump between OS’s, which is fair. Obviously for now, people are still going to use Windows because they have to, not because they want to. Like I said, even I have programs that only work on Windows, so I’m going to have to use it, but that doesn’t mean I like it. I hate this direction Microsoft is going and I hope they make Recall an easier feature to remove from my computer.

plus the fact that recall can only be "use" or run on are ultra modern only (with a stupid npu) is bullshit ... remote and monitoring and spyware did the same and work with less recent pc

"Windows 11 24H2 NO Recall is NOT Mandatory" - Even, Windows 11 is also NOT Mandatory... I dropped it.

Yeah sure. How would taking a screenshot every 30 seconds or whatever and sending it to MS, require a PC with AI hardware onboard?!
This recall BS has to go.

What I'm curious about is why Microsoft is installing it on non Copilot Plus PCs? I was under the impression that it needed a certain processor to run. I also do not see anywhere in the O/S where it says uninstall.

Going on the internet is like going out to town. But what happens on your desktop is akin to what's in your house. I don't want them to have the ability, because, if they can, they will.

Where is the Microsoft blog post about Recall? I hoped you had it posted in the description. Thanks.

are you really that naive? I work with Microsoft stack on every lvl from enterprise endpoints, intune, O365, sharepoint exchange up to architecting and engineering Azure infrastructure and maintaining IaaC repos. And what I have been able to grasp is that Microsoft really does not care about personal privacy unless you are enterprise and have resources - in that case data actually will not leave your tenant, BUT for personal accounts, copilot is basicaly showeling everything you ask it to tap from prompt, websites and office as training material to microsoft. With that in mind do you really think that Microsoft will never take advantage of recall on personal laptops when it is really biggest and greates data pool for advertising? Now it is as dependency in explorer and frankly I do not care if it is just hanging around doing nothing, but it is there. You cannot uninstall it unless you want to revert your file explorer to that plain server version. Think about it twice buddy.

I am also tired of disabling all the telemetry sht with every update, where registry keys are getting obsolete and replaced by new telemetry keys which are allowed by default.

And thus I use ARCH btw now.

Just remember: if they can—they will. But it's up to you if you wanna learn that the hard way. As for me, what goes on on my desktop is the same as what goes on in my house—it's private. And I'm not talking about browsing the internet—I'm talking about my personal desktop. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want someone's camera in my house and their bare word for it that it's not recording. So yeah, no matter what it takes, recall will never be on my PC. And if that's a simple uninstall, then all the better!

“You can uninstall it.”

Okay, teach us how, then.

In a work environment I can see this being a fantastic feature. As a tech guy with a support team we've discovered: User's lie. They lie to protect themselves. They lie to save face. Recall is something that will help us provide support.

For personal devices? It is an instant disable/uninstall for me. I don't need it and I wouldn't use it. The images may or may not leave my machine. The meta data may or may not leave my machine. I don't really care.

Linux is nice if you have already defined the use of your machine for its foreseeable future. Gaming comes with caveats, as does my use case (VR). I installed bazzite on my kids' mini pc and it has turned out to be a lot of softre trouble when working with working with emulation and gaming. HTPC use is fine. Windows 10 and 11 on the same box is really easy with minimal revisits required for teaks, updates and fixes.

I would still disable it and if need be remove files for it from C drive if need be. Just like i do with edge, keeps coming back after removal, so i go in and remove all the edge related files from the c drive and it stops it coming back also helps with stopping co pilot as well.

There was a small update yesterday in temp files measured in kbs that induced Windows popups that can not be removed. Although it can be kinda deleted in the Apps and features. It will no longer pester people with the pop ups after this
