When BB King Buddy Guy and Eric Clapton say you're that good. You're that good.

There is an old joke about Stevie. Stevie made a deal with the Devil. No one knows what Stevie got, but the Devil got guitar lessons.

People talk mostly about his guitar playing, but he had a hell of a voice too.

I have to commend John Mayer for not letting the audience applaud his entrance to the stage. That night, it belonged to Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Damn John gave probably the best speech about another person I’ve ever heard

There totally needs to be a Bohemian Rhapsody-style biopic of this man, including the inspirational aspect of how determined he was to get his drug addiction out of his life. If done right, I would see such a movie in a heartbeat.

In my own opinion, John Mayer is the only one, besides Jimmie Vaughan, worthy enough to induct Stevie. It might just be me, but the blues and rock and roll are a dying class of music. I feel lost talking to my friends about music these days because it doesn’t feel like music anymore. John is a great ambassador for the blues and I am happy that he continues to preach the word of SRV, Hendrix, and the like to those in his fan base. I’ll love this music until I die. Folks, quit bashing on Mayer and be glad that someone in the music industry is attempting to keep what we love alive.

In 1992, I was a young man trying to learn guitar and tuned into the sounds of the day. A mix of Guns N’ Roses, Nirvana, Metallica and so on and then one day my guitar teacher handed me a cassette with Stevie playing “love struck baby” and “pride and joy” and after listening to that nothing else mattered to me. My guitar teacher was trying to teach me to be bob dylan and failed the day he handed me that cassette tape and after he quit trying to teach me my second teacher who was a Neal Schon/eddie Van Halen clone saw that he wasn’t gonna get far with me but he did the best he could and then one day while at “the tape deck” in our local mall I found under the live concert area of there tiny VHS section a copy of “live at El Macambo” and I grabbed that tape and wouldn’t leave the mall until my poor mother bought me that tape and I took it home and watched it with a guitar in my hands and mouth agape at what I had just seen. From then on I locked myself in my room and let Stevie teach me how to play the guitar. I wore down copies of that tape and every time I would go to my guitar lessons my teacher would just add years to my playing saying things like “you sound like you’ve been playing for 10 years” and to this day I am not half the guitar player I am without Stevie Ray Vaughan. I lived, ate, and breathed SRV and learning about the man who had long passed by my time also taught me to be the man I am today as well. My father is my hero and Stevie is my guitar hero and it’ll never be different. God bless SRV!

To this day, I think of SRV. I play his music, and feel those unbelievable guitar riffs in my heart. I say this because I fought those demons..I was one month away from celebrating 1 year of sobriety when I saw SRV, Jimmy Vaughan, Robert Cray, Buddy Guy and Eric Clapton at Alpine Valley. It was hot, and unbelievably humid. I sat 6 rows in front of Stevie. He came onto the stage first. He talked about the struggles he once had, and his sobriety. It brought tears to my eyes. Then he started playing....just blew it away! Even Clapton remarked to Buddy, how could he match that! Stevie was magnificent. Then the rest of these incredible musicians joined in. My friends from AA and I walked to our car with some difficulty because the fog was so thick. The next day my sister called me and said there was a horrible helecopter accident, but didn't know who it involved. Later, it was confirmed that Stevie was killed. I went limp at the office, and left to attend a meeting. I was in tears. It was written that Buddy Guy said to Clapton, he hoped the pilot knew what he was doing. You couldn't see. Stevie had changed copters at the last minute to get back to Chicago. The guys waited for Stevie's return at Legends for a get-together. Never would happen. The pilot of Stevie's copter had citations, and on that fateful night, hit the ski slope. I cried at that meeting, and for the next two weeks. Played Tightrope and Crossfire. He was young, gained ultimate respect and awe by fellow musicians, and had a beautiful girlfriend. His life was in order. I still hold onto the ticket stub. I wrote Buddy Guy, and often frequented Legends in Chicago. Buddy wrote me back a beautiful letter. I went to Legends. Buddy was playing, smiling, and suddenly tossed his guitar pic out towards my direction. My...while people were scrambling to look for it, I looked down and it was in my lap. That was truly spiritual for me. All I can say is even in sobriety, you'll face hardships. God tests us. I just hit the 30 year mark last September of this year. I'll never forget this beautiful man, this gifted guitarist loved by thousands of music loving people.

That white boy was FILLED with the blues. When you get the attention of Albert King, you know you're a bluesman. Stevie was the very definition of the blues. RIP great one. 23 years, and I'm STILL devastated.
Reese Wynans gave me just as many chills. Best 88 key tickler that has ever lived.

I am a 54 year man from Pittsburgh, Pa and I still remember exactly where I was when I heard the news of the death of SRV and I literally dropped to my knees and started to cry, that will be 30 years ago this August and I simply do not accept that, that cannot be possible, I know what this man did to overcome his demons and his addictions and to overcome that and then have it all taken away in the blink of an eye was a dagger that I still have not recovered from, I hope I can listen to this man someday in heaven, maybe jamming with Jeff Healey and co, RIP SRV, you are sorely missed

I’m tired of all of these people who know nothing about Mayer talking about him as if they have the right to to say things out of ignorance and jealousy. So with that being said let me inform all of you as to who John Mayer really is.

The casual observer of Mayer wouldn’t know that he picked up the guitar because of hearing Texas flood at the age of 13. He grew up idolizing his blues heroes, namely Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert King, B.B. King, and Buddy Guy. He formed a band with his high school friends named Villanova Junction after the late Jimi Hendrix. He started off covering Jimi and Stevie and set out to be a blues guitarist like his heroes. I mean for god sakes his first tattoo was Stevie’s initials on his upper arm. Later on after dropping out of berklee and trying to make it on his own, he started experimenting with pop and found out that it was much easier to garner attention playing more “listenable” music for everyone. More people would without a doubt prefer listening to a pop song in this day and age then a typical blues guitar oriented song. So with that knowledge under his belt he made Room for Squares and the rest is history. Using his popularity and the platform that he created for himself after room for squares and heavier things, he began to drift back towards the music that had originally and always had inspired him as a mere teen with continuum, blues inspired music. Nowadays he still hasn’t gone full on blues, but he has done numerous guitar driven performances on stage at various shows over the years, namely covers of SRV, Hendrix and Clapton. He’s done things on the where the light is live album that would blow your mind. He’s done a live blues album titled TRY that would once again show you what I’m talking about. The man has inducted SRV and Albert King into the rock and roll hall of fame because of how associated he is with them and has shared the stage with the likes of B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck among many others. There is a video interview done with Clapton that has him saying that John Mayer is a master guitarist. Not only that, Clapton has invited Mayer to his crossroads festival ever since Mayer became a popular artist.

Speaking as a native Texan…it breaks my heart that SRV is no longer with us. I’m sure many others miss him likewise. We love you Stevie.
